Topamax and Depression
Have any of you experienced adverse side effects from topamax? These are some things I get and I figured they were better than migraines but now I am beginning to wonder. Feeling of desperation, feel like I'm holding my breath all day, ok to just stare at a wall and do nothing for hours if given the choice with no emotion about it, stressed out more, have felt like I'm floating twice on it(weird feeling), irritable for no logical reason, super lazy, reclusive. Anybody get these side effects?

Re: Topamax and Depression
I've been very resistant to try Topamax because of the side effects. My granddaughter is doing well on it so far but she is taking a very small dose. Normally if you experience difficult side effects the dosage should be reduced. I would suggest you speak to your doctor about reducing the dosage. Also you might consider a grain free diet. Many folks who eat grain free to lose weight are finding that their migraines either diminish greatly or disappear altogether. Just something to think about and perhaps do a little research.

Yeah my wife has put me on multiple gluten free paleo so on and so forth diets, nothing really ever worked. Only avoiding some key trigger foods has helped. I was really just looking to see if these side effects are common on this medication. Since I am waiting for my neuro appt I stopped my topamax to see if that would help and day one, I am already feeling better.

Depending on your dose, be careful just stopping taking it...seizures can happen when you stop Topamax suddenly, even if you've never had seizures before.
I've posted numerous times, as have others that Topamax was the worst medicine ever. I've got ex coworkers that did well on it, but I wasn't one of them. I was a student, and failing anatomy since I couldn't memorize anything due to short term memory loss that's common on Topamax. I'd never failed anything academic, and started having panic attacks, then suicidal thoughts. I broke down in my neuro's office and sobbed for 45 mins, and I was only on 50mg. She quick tapered me off, but with another med to prevent seizures.
Another migrainer on one of the boards I'm on was placed inpatient at a mental health facility while on Topamax, once they stopped the med, they no longer needed to be inpatient, and I thought was eventually off all psychiatric interventions.
I will never take Topamax again, but I know that it helps so many...I just think it's a med that doctors need to be more careful with tapering and keeping track of their pt's when they begin it.

Re: Topamax and Depression
Have any of us NOT experience side effects from Topomax, is what you should be asking!
Yes, of course... I experienced strange thoughts about suicide, personality change that my family told me about where I acted angry, unable to think of words, crying for no reason, etc. And it didn't even help my migraines to boot!

Topomax is called Dopomax for a reason. Your experiences are not uncommon.

Wow, I guess I'm not alone on this one... Well I haven't had any seizures since I stopped taking it. I did have one uncontrollable migraine yesterday, but today I am feeling better.

Re: Topamax and Depression
I was on Topamax for a couple years, but not now. I simply just wanted to drive my car off a steep embankment, and other not so safe stuff while on vacation. I took a break off meds before I started my now current med. The whole time I was on a med break I had some of the worst non-stop pain ever. I know that the topamax was helping me, but now I take something else and I am much better.
