CAlcium/magnesium and zinc question
So I have had migraine/ aura on and off for about 20 years. I started calcium/mag/zinc at the request of my doctor, not for migraines but for bone health. I did not have one migraine for the year I took it. I just never bought anymore and soon after the migraines began again, not a lot but one every couple of months. Do you think it was the calcium/mag/zinc tabs that were helping or maybe it is just because I am in Peri-menopause an it feels as if everything is out of whack right now?

Re: CAlcium/magnesium and zinc question
Well I dont know about the zinc, but there is good evidence that magnesium can reduce migraine problems. My neurologist recommended 400 mg daily. If it was working for you, I'd definitely start taking it again.
I dont know of anyone who got better with peri-menopause. Many people, myself included, got worse or started having headaches with peri-menopause. I am hoping it will all go away once full menopause sets in, but that's not guaranteed.

I am going to buy another bottle tomorrow for sure. I am a hot mess right now with the peri-menopause too and just hoping it all goes by really fast. I would rather have the hot flashes than the migraines with aura, very scary and unnerving.

CAlcium/magnesium and zinc question
Hello together!
I' new here. I'm coming from Germany so excuse me, my spelling isn't perfect sometimes.
It's a good idea to try magnesium. You can also combine it with vitamin B2 as a natural prophylaxis.
Here in Germany you get it as tabletts or capsules. Don't take to much magnesium you can
get diarrhoe. But with 400 mg it's ok.
Better you get magnesium citrit, it's a magnesium salt from citric fruits.
Sincerely Peter from Germany

Thanks Peter, I started my calcium/mag/zinc again and I am hoping the migraines will go away once again. Is it ok to take vitamin B2 with that?

Hello tinalouise!
Yes you can try it. But not to much magnesium. You can also try Q10.
Do you do some relaxing exercises? It's also recommended. A littlebit sport, so
my neurologist, is also recommended.
With greetings from Germany
Peter

Hello together again!
In Germany we have a combi its called Migravent. It's a combination of following
things: Magnesium, Vitamin B2 und Coenzym Q10 an other.
So it's recommended by our Migräneliga (German Migrain Ligue)
read german.
You can also take zinc. But I don't exactly know, whether zinc has an
effect of your migraines.
Sincerely Peter

Re: CAlcium/magnesium and zinc question
I don't do any "relaxation" exercises but I do run on the treadmill daily as well as strength training a few days a week. That helps quite a bit actually and I often find that my migraines show up on the days I don't exercise.
Just curious, why not too much magnesium? I only take 400 milligrams now.
Thank you for the help.

Large amounts of magnesium can act as a laxative, think Milk of Magnesia.
The optimum dosage of magnesium is to find out at what quantity you reach bowel tolerance (diarrhea), then take a little less than that amount daily, in divided doses.

Yes you can take B2 with the magnesium. My neuro recommended 400 mg of each.
The magnesium does give some people the runs, but I have not had that problem with it. You will need to find out your own tolerance level.
If you continue to have problems, you might also want to checkout bio identical progesterone supplements. They helped me quite a bit. For more info on that see

Thank you for the info..so far no runs, actually the opposite!! Must be the calcium but no migraine yesterday or today so, so far so good!
I will check out the bio identical progesterone. I have heard of this I think for peri-menopaausal symptoms too??

hello
I take 500mg of Magnesium Citrate. At first it gave my slight diahera (sp) but that has stopped. So no problems now. My doctor recommended the citrate from. What form are you taking?

I take magesium sulfate. It's not so efficent as the citrate form, but it's cheaper. Recommended is indeed the citrate form. But it is better than no magnesium. I combine it with 200 mg metroprolol.
