Anyone here take Magnesium?
Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone here takes Magnesium to help with headaches. If so, how much do you take and has it helped?
I've been fainting a lot lately, which also makes migraines worse. Years ago, when I was diagnosed with POTS and migraine I was on salt, potassium, and magnesium and it helped a little bit. With the heat, it has been a little harder to get the right balance and since Magnesium can also help migraines, I've decided to try it again. How much do you take? I also had it IV at the headache clinic- it did not help much.
Any help or advice would be great.
Pain free days,

I'm on magnesium glycinate, have been for years because every time I'd see a new specialist, they'd wanna try it and co-q-10, which I can't afford...so by staying on the magnesium I say it helps some but the co-q didn't, so I stopped it due to cost. I'm taking 2 pills a day, 400mg per pill. I like the KAL brand, they work, and they're cheap on Amazon. The mag glycinate is the easiest oral magnesium on the tummy, the only easier way to get it is skin gel our erosEpsom salt baths

Strangely, I can't take any magnesium at all. Even getting in an epsom salt bath for 15 minutes causes stomach issues for the next 24 hours for me. Taking any amount in any pill is totally intolerable.

I've heard some people are like that...I'm fine on the mag glycinate, but the other forms really mess up my system...almost as badly as strong antibiotics. Epsom salt baths are one of my favorite sore muscle/post migraine baths, since usually I'm low from skipping all the vitamins during a bad spell.
I had a decent laugh at a nurse last week that most everyone here will get. She was subbing for my doc, so I knew my med list alone would throw her, so I warned her that's it's long, adds yes, I take it all. We get to vitamin D, which I take 10,000 IU's daily to keep my blood values normal (huge amount, most people take that much once a week at most, dairy free diet and avoiding the sun like a vampire will do it). She sees the amount and states ok, weekly...nope, I interrupt, daily..that's what keep my values within range, look at May's lab work if you need to.I think she did, and then almost mentally shuddered and plowed through the rest. I hate when he has a sub...I'm not a normal pt. I know my meds, my dosages, how often and why.
I wish there was a flag to put on the competent pt's charts so people would know the pt's who've either got med degrees or have bothered to learn about what's wrong with them, to help their own treatment! Ok, hoping off my soapbox, thanks for listening and getting it

Re: Anyone here take Magnesium?
Yes, I have taken magnesium for years and it really helps reduce migraines and just general headachiness.
I take 250 mg in the morning and 250 mg in the evening. You should start at 200 for a few days. If no problems go up to 400, and adjust from there. It can give you the trots if you take too much. But that is the only problem I have ever experienced. You just have to find out what dose you can manage before that sets in.
You should be able to tell a difference in a week or so. It is certainly worth a try!

I have been taking 250 morning and night for almost 3 months now, no move on the Migraines. I have started it due to depletion traced to another med I have taken for over 15 years.

I've been taking Magnesium and vitamin B2 for years. It didn't reduce the frequency of my migraines, but it certainly reduces the severity. I never have those 'lock myself in a dark room' migraines anymore.
