experience with IV infusions of magnesium?

my headache specialist has recommended this as a preventive for menstrual migraines. i have migraines MANY other times throughout the month, but the most horrible ones come a few days before, during and a few days after my period. has anyone tried this treatment?

yes, i did try this in a hospital ER, several years ago. (i had called ahead to 3 hospitals in my city, and only one had the magnesium sulfate required).

it's not entirely benign; there must be monitoring of one's heart, as the mag. can cause it to stop!

i had no bad effects, and a small lessening of the immediate symptoms, but the pain came back as strong as ever within a short time. it seems a bit drastic if one has many migraines per month.....but hey, worth a try!

anything feasible is worth a try. it must work for some people. i would ask the doc who recommended this for some hard-copy studies you could read first. dianne

I tried it about 12 yrs ago. I was just starting to see what became a long term wonderful Dr. and he wanted to try it. I was in a Hospital setting with an Infusion Clinic, so I had it done there, with as mentioned before......plenty of monitoring.

I think I had it done weekly, maybe twice weekly for about 8 weeks. I always did well with it, no problems........just never had any positive effects.

But if you are being offered it....I'd try it.....one never knows what might work for them!
