New Aura...
Last night I went to bed confident that I was going to make through a full work day today. I had my super-duper pain killers for my back and was ready to hunt bear.
Went into work a little early so that I could take my med's and have them be working by the time my work period started (since I'm new to the drug I'm not comfortable driving with it).
Other than two quick pierces in my back, that buckled my left leg, I was doing good. The pain of that episode let up wihtin five minutes.
Two hours into the work day I was helping a patron and all of a sudden I couldn't read the writing in front of me. Everything went wavy, like when you look at the end of a road on a very hot day. I called hubby. Also had a friend look on the internet and one of the side effects of my super duper pain killer can be vision problems and it said to see a Dr right away. My eye Dr was out of town, but he called me and said he wanted me to be seen by an opthamologist right away. Hubby came home from work and drove me up to the eye Dr. By that time I had the worse migraine I've had in over a year. Stabbing pains from behind my right eye down into the front of my neck (that's a new one for me).
After having eyes dilated, pressure tests etc., I was diagnosed with...Classic Migraine with Aura.
Surprise!
The opthamoligist said though that it was important for me to be checked because retinal tears can mimick auras. He said the key is if it disappears or decreases within 45 min. - 1 hour it's probably a migraine, if it doesn't disappear or gets worse get to the eye Dr. right away.
I'm extremely disappointed that my super-duper med. will not take care of my migraine pain. It's doing a great job on my back, but very little for my head. In the realm of painkillers I'm not sure if there is much else that is stronger. I'm having a pity party today. It sucks to be me. And yes, on the way up to the eye Dr. I told hubby I wish I wouldn't wake up in the morning. I am getting so frustrated and tired of hurting. I thought I had an end in hand, and I didn't.

Charlotte,
So sorry this didn't help with the M but at least you can sort of function again - little back pain. It's so disappointing when a med doesn't work like we think it should. Sending you a hug cause that's all I can do.

Paradox, I feel for ya. What you experienced today is what I get EVERY time I have a M.
My auras r so frightening that the level 10 headache I get as well is a distant thought. My life is ran by my M's and everytime I get the smallest disturbance in my vision I think one is coming and I run for my pill case attached to my key chain. Today was a particularly hard day. The gleaming sun really does wonders on glares and spots in your eyes. I spent 50% of my day today wondering if I was getting one.
Write down what you have eaten in the last 7 days and I betcha we can find something in there that you shouldnt have. Get that diary going and see what the reason for such a bad M was.
"Dont give up, never give up" was a quote from Jimmy Valvano that has the most meaningful thing that I have ever heard anyone say. This poor guy was riden with tumors all over his body when he gave his speech and they were shoving him off stage cutting his speech short when he said, "i have tumors all over my body and you think I care about your red light, Fanabala" in front of all of America.
Stay strong, dont look at it as a disability. Look at it with optimism and say that your lucky to have migraines, there are so many worse things out there that I could be suffering from. I know it sucks, believe me, I almost lost my battle with them, but you have to stay strong.
I am sorry but i dont know if you have any children, but if you do, do it for them. They need their momma. If not, do it for your husband, who I am sure loves you very dearly and needs you just as much.
Please dont allow this miserable disability to "control" you. Try and stay positive. I am sorry you have to live with this.

Re: New Aura...
You poor thing...what a scary situation.
Something similar happened to me 20 years ago and I was not even a migraine sufferer at that time.
It is possible that the anti-inflammatory is the culprit. Drugs often play weird tricks...
I hope that everything is over now

Re: New Aura...
Thank you for your kind words. I am mentally better today. Back at work determined this is going to be a good day.
Two little things happened yesterday that improved my mood. And it had to do with two strangers. One was the eye technician. He was a delightful young man, caring, compassionate yet with a great sense of humor. He could not pronounce "dilaudid". He kept calling it "dillydid" And then he'd giggle. I love when big, hulking men giggle. Whenever he would leave the room he would look at me and say "door". I know, not much, but he was very cognizant of my photophobia. Towards the end he was saying it in a silly high pitched squeak.
Then hubby and I stopped at a restaurant and I desperately needed to the use the restroom. Of course it was being serviced. I must have been standing with my legs triple crossed, a frantic look on my face. The young man came out and said "Sorry, the bathroom is out of order". When he saw the look on my face, he barked out a booming laugh and said "No, it's fine, but the look on your face was great".
Two complete strangers lifted my mood by just being kind. I'm sure that part of it is that I'm overweight and 50 and often feel invisible, and it was nice to have two young nice looking men interacting with me.
It's made me decide to try and interact a little more with strangers. May be a little thing I do will brighten their day.
