What an interesting question. There are so many to choose from, but I think perhaps The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
Wonderful characters which jump our of each page, a powerful description of human suffering resulting from the greed of big companies (banks) taking advantage of a natural disaster wonderful plot so you cannot put the book down.
What is most amazing that 80 years ago, it is as relevant today, as it was when it was written about 80 years ago. This could be written today.
