Kind of discouraged Empty Kind of discouraged

Post  Tamsha101 Mon Nov 28, 2011 2:28 pm

I went and saw my neuro this morning. He's going to try me on Inderal but pretty much said the odds of it helping will be slim. I've tried all the more effective drugs with little result. He said he's had quite a few women come through his door like me - sometimes it takes months, sometimes years for the migraines to subside. Hard to tell with the perimenopausal shift which he attributes to my daily chronic migraine. In the meantime, try and control my triggers best I can. Easy for HIM to say!! Not good news. Sad

Kind of discouraged Empty When to change doctors

Post  Dink Mon Nov 28, 2011 9:21 pm

My wife has a never ending migraine for over ten years now. (At least some doctors call it that.) Been fighting migraines for 15 years now. We've been to many doctors, and several headache doctors, pain management, and so forth. What we've learned is to not spend to much time at one. Some don't have a clue how to help some peoples headaches, but are reluctant to let them loose, or find them help by someone that has more expertise.

There are thousands of neurologists that treat headaches, but they aren't HEADACHE specialists. First, don't just go to your local hospital, because they'll send you to their neurologists. And I can assure you, he treats more than just headaches. My wife has spent 10 years going to doctors, and I could have treated her headaches as well as they did. We've been there and done that.

She finally ended up near Washington, and I had to find her doctor. But I was given his name from a migraine sufferer right here on the Internet. Actually my wife's Headache Specialist is in Alexandria Va. And he's good, real good. On our first visit, he sat us down, and said. Migraines are normal believe it of not, but a 24/7 headache is not. And he went to work to determine what was causing it. More eliminating in three visits than she had in 10 years. She is now having migraine surgery at Georgetown Hospital. We'll know more, and I won't post anything until later on this.

But the moral here is, if your, what I call, run of the mill doctor isn't helping you, look for a GREAT headache specialist to treat you. All migraine sufferers deserve this. I stayed so aggravated from the lack of treatment she received, I built a web site to try to help migraine sufferers. It has 250 pages now of info. I have a lot of dos and don'ts. The mistakes we made that just cost more pain and suffering.

We have info on pillows for people that have neck problems that trigger headaches, to the herbs for migraines, to vitamins, headache surgery, headache clinics to much more. Actually, I recommend reading books on migraines. There's power in knowledge. Hope this isn't to long, but just wanted to let people know there is hope for migraine relief. We get e-mails from all over the world, and their chief complaint is that they have headaches everyday. We just hope some of our info helps someone.

All the best with the headaches

We do need docs who can think outside the box so getting a second opinion from someone else in your area is a good idea. I have pretty much given up on meds for now cause this body just can't handle the side effects so am just trying to control my triggers and keep my sanity. I am so sorry that your current doc has run out of ideas - have had a couple of neuros tell me the same thing and pass me on to someone else. I just wish that they understood more about what exactly was happening in my head so they could better target the meds. Please keep us posted. L

Dink, thanks for posting. It is great to hear your advise. Do let us know how the Georgetown surgery goes. I've been very curious about what they can do.
