New to this place - Can you advise me please?

Post  kitkat9 on Fri May 13, 2011 8:36 am

Hello. I have had 2 strokes (one which has left me with permanent sight problems)and 32 other episodes where I lose my speech, numb lips, palpitations, right side weakness etc for up to 2 weeks! I have had migraine with aura since I was 11.My 5th neuro is totally confused and is about to put it down to strange migraines. I find it hard to accept to be honest but maybe someone out there has the same type of symptoms and can advise me? It's been nearly 7 years of confusion for me. Thanks, Tracey x

There are migraines that cause stroke like symptoms called Hemiplegic Migraine. I don't have these symptoms with my migraines, but I know some here do. Since you have already had 2 real strokes, though, I'd be leery of just chalking it up to migraines without some type of further investigation. Maybe it is, but I wouldn't want to take that as a definite diagnosis unless I got another opinion.

I'm glad you found our little home here and I hope some others more knowledgeable than I can help you out.

To be perfectly honest a doctor who diagnoses you as having "strange migraines" isn't someone I'd continue seeing. Brenda is right that it sounds like hemiplegic migraine. I'd highly recommend you find a migraine specialist for treatment. A regular neurologist isn't necessarily knowledgeable about migraine.
