How many different pain meds have you tried before you found the right one for you?

I've tried several prescription ones, and Vicodin is the only one that works. Aleve over the counter also helps. The others didn't do a thing.

Oh, it would be very difficult to list all I have tried in the 35 years I have been fighting this monster.
What works?
Vicoden (oddly enough, vico works better for me than the stronger Dilaudid. Have never figured out why).
Cambria (just recently started using this with success)
Toradol injections.
Codeine helps short term (for a couple hours) but I end up with a worse rebound headache later.

I have very limited range of painkillers I can try,
as I once hurt my stomach badly with aspirin, and ever since I immediately feel horrible burn after only one Naproxen 500mg or two Advil regular strength, or any NSAID.
So I can only take something like T3, Percocet with triptans but thankfully it does work decent for me.

i've been prescribed quite a few except for the end of the road meds--i do not want to take them.
dilaudid and vicodin have been helpful--except they won't let me sleep, and cause itching. very rare use.
some muscle relaxants like flexeril have been helpful. baclofen has been helpful.
ultram has been useless unless taken at higher doses.

Still haven't found anything that stops them. The only things that blunt them are Norco Imitrex Injectable and Toradol.

Like most, I've been at the mercy of the doctor ordering. So many can't be bothered to listen to my history about what I've found effective, or are full-on anti-pain meds that I ended up taking a whole lot of things that I didn't want to take but was so desperate for pain relief that I took.
I've always felt that tylenol with codeine is my most effective one but even that doesn't work some times.
Now that I have a pain specialist, I suppose I could trial other meds.

Hi,
I have tried most of them at one time or another. I've even done most of the long acting medications-of those, MSContin helped most.
For the short acting, Tylenol #3. A few months ago, I went off the long acting and back on Tylenol 3, with my pain drs blessing.
Still, it never goes away entirely. I hope you find something soon.
Pain free days,

Re: pain medications..how many have you tried before you found the right one for you?
I've tried pretty much all of them except Fentanyl because my doctor thinks its only for cancer pain. Currently settled on Methadone for long acting and Oxycodone for short acting (was on Opana for awhile but it wasn't working as well, so I went back to Oxycodone, which has always gave me the best relief). It does take quite a bit of trial and error for many. My biggest side effect was nausea (some cause it bad, but the ones I'm on rarely cause it). Tolerance or the med just plain not working for the pain are annoying. Its helpful when a doctor is willing to let you try different ones to see what works best, not just settling on one (unless it works well with no side effects so you don't want to try anything else). My doctor tends to prescribe a very low dose at first and tell me to titrate up until I get relief, but doesn't tell me a max, and then is surprised when I come back and tell him I took X mg. lol. But then he says something like thats a lot but ok and writes another script. I start with the cheap ones and then try brand if needed (like the Opana, which cost an arm and a leg)....I usually only take generics due to cost unless something really calls for brand.

Almost all OTC (aspirin, paracetamol, naproxene, ketoprofene....)
Then I tried ergots and they worked so well....
Of course, I have kept searching for other treatments as ergots are quite heavy for liver and kidneys.
I've tried triptans, narcotics, steroids, non-OTC anti-inflammatories (indomethacine, toradol, etc). Some worked partially, some did nothing.
So, i'm back to ergots as main remedy
