rock n roll earthquake this afternoon
The old Mendocino Triple Junction was acting up again today. We had a pretty good shaker this afternoon up my way. 6.5 I heard it lasted fairly long, 15 seconds. That's a short time normally but when everything around you is violently shaking, it seems like a long time. I stayed sitting where I was 'cause it was reasonably safe and I couldn't stand up anyway. I swear I heard glass breaking but afterward I didn't find any. I am surprised how little it actually did in our house considering how hard and how long it shook.
The power went out and then the fire dept came around and told us to evacuate due to a potential gas leak. We were headed out to a meeting anyway and decided to go on with our plans. The building we were supposed to meet at was closed down. But several people looking for the meeting were standing around in the parking lot talking so we ended up having the meeting anyway.
We went back home after a couple of hours. The power was still off but there weren't any signs or any personnel telling us to stay out of the area so I have to assume the gas leak problem, if there was one, was taken care of.
It was a good sized quake but the media in other areas always greatly exaggerates the damage. The media goes looking for the one business out of hundreds that has a broken showcase window.
I was wondering if other Ronda's folks in CA and southern Oregon felt it also.
I'm fine and do not have a migraine I'm happy to report. As far as earthquakes go, I've lived in one part or another of California all my life so the ground shaking is probably not nearly as disturbing as it is for folks who moved here from elsewhere. Many of you live in areas that get tornadoes and hurricanes. I find those forces of nature much, much scarier and they last so looong.

I heard about this on the news this morning and wondered if anyone had felt it! Sounds like a lot of people were without power - glad it wasn't too damaging for the most part. Sounds scary to me, but I'm in NY and that rarely happens here. The only two I've had here were very small and it didn't fully dawn on me what it was until it was done. Stay safe!

How very scary, and I am glad you are OK! I can't imagine what it's like to be in an earthquake and I don't think I would like to experience one. Even if the media exaggerated, I believe it was terrifying enough!

Surely heard about it....and there have been a handful in the Bay Area earlier in the week.......hope it's not building up to something truly big and populated.
Glad you and yours are fine.

I felt that one. Just a bit. I was lying down reading when I felt a little tremor. I thought it might have been my cat jumping on the bed, but no cats in sight. It was so slight that I wasn't sure it was a tremor, but there ya go. Walnut Creek is a few hundred miles down the coast so by the time it reached us it was just a little roll.
I love the little ones. I always yell Earthquake!!!!! to my daughter and she'll just say "uh, yeah Mom". The only one that ever scared me was Loma Prieta in '89. That was a looooooong one and scared the bejesus out of me. I've lived here my whole life so earthquakes are old hat. I'm with you on the hurricanes and tornados..... they happen EVERY year and last way too long.
