Re: Very discouraged...Botox
I haven't read all of your posts but have you ever had nerve block injections in your head?
If so and they failed to help, your neurologist should have specified that Botox wouldn't work either. The way both work is sort of based on similar principles. If you never had nerve blocks then at least you will know not to waste your time on it.
How many preventatives have you tried at once? Did you go to the max dosage on either? What class of preventatives have you tried? Have you exhausted the betablocker, anti-depressant, anticonvulsant (topomax, etc) routes. Have you combined them or just used as monotherapy?
Has your neurologist run all proper bloodwork searching for reasons behind intractable headaches. Has he tested b-12, vitamin d, levels? These are very important.
What's the most powerful rescue medication you have tried? I assume you've been through the triptans. Have you tried the ergots, the powerful nsaids, the butalbitals, the opiates, the muscle relevant like soma or flexeril or zanaflex?
Do your headaches come from some form of anxiety? If so have you considered the benzos (klonopin, xanax,Atavan, etc)
I'm sorry for all the questions I'm new and look forward to conversing with you. Let's see what are available options are and what you've tried so we can eliminate the migraines. You and I are sort of in the same boat.
Goodluck and have a great day.

Re: Very discouraged...Botox
I feel your pain, Gail. I just tried Botox two weeks ago and if anything, my headaches seem worse. I had nerve block injections before also and they worked for maybe 4 days. I'm still hoping the botox will kick in. I feel like I've tried everything too. I saw another specialist here (NYC) who is a scientist and she just started me on namenda. I've tried everything else, but she really believes this will help me. I guess I'll see. Have you tried it?

That's interesting you were put on memantine Greent. Hope it works for you.
Unfortunately, current research shows that those who don't respond well to nerve block injections don't typically respond well to botox either. I hope your neurologist explained this to you. It's one of the reasons why I won't try that route. But I hope this isn't your case and your migraines do improve.

tyrosinekinase, you bring up some interesting points. I am going to ask my neuro to check my vitamin levels. My neuro has never done blood tests (CSF tests, yes. Blood tests, no).

Check for various forms of Lyme disease as well. Thats a standard test done too to make sure nothing serious is going on in terms of secondary causes of headaches and migraines that don't go away.
