All you need is aspirin
I took 10-12 Excedrin or aspirin for years with no result, then moved up to the heavy hitters. I bet the study was funded by the companies who manufacture aspirin. How about the link to the article over on the right side that says that people use migraines as an excuse to take off work:
"The YouGov poll of 2,105 people found 15% of workers who admitted to making up illness to get a day off used migraine as their excuse.
The research suggested the fact that people were faking migraines put real sufferers in a difficult position."
As if it's not enough of a problem we have to call off work, people are using it as an excuse when they don't have a migraine which casts more suspicion on those of us with legitimate needs to take off for migraines.

Re: All you need is Aspirin
Noona, I posted this on my FB group and a dr who is on there with me made the same comment right away.
Next time you are debilitated try explaining to your boss/family why you didnt just take 3 aspirins.
Its like sending CFS back to Yuppy Flu......
Aspirin is actually my drug of choice, it works for me for most things. I have another myofascial pain and aspirin and caffeine can help it. As for migraine, forget it......
One lady commented that she spent £50 going to our London migraine clinic to be told to take 3 aspirins with lemonade.
Here we go all over again....
Donbt recognise your name, are you new or have I missed you...either way...Hello

Dont you just hate those people, we have someone at work that has alot of sickness and every so often when they have run out of the usual excuses, such as tummy bug, my childs ill, my car broke down, i have a 24 hour virus etc etc they will throw in a migraine, its so insulting!

Theresae - we have one of those at work also. Get this one. She will call in and say she feels a little "migrainey". This was after she found out I got migraines and how disabling they are to me. She isn't fooling anyone though.

HA... a har har har har har!!
Not much good if your stomach shuts down like mine does during migraine. So those helpful little aspirin just sit on top of whatever's not being digested doing sweet F.A.... That's why I have nasal spray Zomig, or injections.
I know the article is careful not to suggest that aspirin helps EVERY migraineur, and it does advocate a pretty hefty whack dosage, but this sort of article is damaging when there are fakers everywhere.
Pah!

Re: All you need is Aspirin
Take a handful of aspirin, several times a day, for DAYS at a time = Ulcer!!! Done that twice. The only thing aspirin is good for is as an abortive, three Excedrin+ two Aleve will work for me about half the time. But if it doesn't abort the migraine, aspirin does nothing for the pain. Not a darn thing. It does no good for me once the migraine set in.

Re: All you need is Aspirin
Years ago Excedrine did work for me. Boy I wish for those days. I wish they would have made the 50% that it helps more prominent.
I think people around me are used to seeing me disabled by them. Dashing at work to get to the bathroom in time. Plus my right eye gets wonky and droops. I don't get to many people anymore who bring up the aspirin anymore or ask if I eat chocolate.
Yes, I've seen a 'migraine" faker at work. Luckily she's retired. We have several true migraine sufferers at work, and she could never understand why she didn't get much sympathy. When you go home with a migraine you don't stop and pick up your dry cleaning first!

I wish it worked. The only thing that I do is Advil with coffee. The Advil alone wont even touch it and all they do is take the edge off. Tylinol won`t even touch it. Excederian Migraine doesn`t help and only makes it worse. Taking Advil all of the time will give me rebounds. I know a guy who can`t take Advil at all because that second day he had a rebound.

I think you are better off taking one strong good thing that works than a hand full of over the counter crap.

Don't forget aspirin is a blood thinner and if you get injured your risk of hypovolemic shock is many times great from blood loss.
"Take an aspirin" If it was that easy none of us would be here. And I would have an extra $8000 to play with that didn't have to go for co-insurance.

Boy, this sounds like an ulcer inducer...... Wonder what the lemonade was supposed to do, other than eat a whole in one's digestive tract.?

The lemonade. We are told to take our med. with sweet fizzy drinks...apparently it can help the drug get into the system quicker and improves absorption....?????????????

Lemonade and aspirin? That makes my stomach hurt just reading it. And I don't even have any stomach problems.

That is interesting. How about triptan's? Does it make them absorb quicker? The reason I don't use them more is because the DHE is instant with me and the triptans take longer.

I have only read that grapefruit juice can cause some meds to absorb faster. I have not heard of lemonade although the acidity could break some materials down faster.

Guess that headache clinic chose to ignore the fact that citrus is a well known migraine trigger.

Not much citrus in our lemonade, it is like 7 up/sprite.
But it can be anything, not just lemonade that was just that one lady and that is our core clinic in the UK...
It could be Rootbeer if you like, just something sweet and carbonated....
Actually I have tried it with Triptans and sometimes it seems to help.
It has never done any harm and is advocated a lot in the UK
However I wouldn't fancy going to the migraine clinic to be told that and pay £50 for the privilege.

Re: All you need is Aspirin
This item is still on the BBC tv red button and reads;
"Aspirin Reduces Migraine Pain."
"Taking aspirin can reduce the pain of migraine headache within 2 hours for over 50% of people, research says."
"The results come from a Cochrane Systematic Review using data from 13 studies"
"Researchers found that a high dose of aspirin also reduces nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound - other symptoms of migraine."
"But experts stress aspirin can cause side efects and some people will still need to rely on migraine medication."
Although the piece on the web is longer they've left out the all important last short paragraph which is bloody typical. The web page will be on line for ages while the interactive tv will be gone inside 48 hours.
Years ago all I used to take for migraine was soluble aspirin and it did work pretty well. My migraines weren't so bad then and weren't very frequent and I was able to manage that way.
More recently I have been reassured by a migraine clinic that I can take aspirin as well as my Elitriptan if necessary and wash it down with lemonaid to help it into my system. I don't use aspirin as it makes my tinnitus worse.

I saw John, as you say bloody typical....
I have tinnitus too. Isnt it maddening. But mine doesnt seem to be related to the aspirin at all.
Just as well, its what I always take, other than triptans....

Aspirin?
I think it's probably good for some kinds of pain. Before triptans, I tried it for migraines. Even if I could keep it down, it didn't help. Why did I keep trying? Always dumbly hopeful I thought, "Maybe it will work this time."
Well, it got to the point where I can't take aspirin at all for anything. No matter what I eat or drink, or if I try it on an empty stomach, it won't stay down. As soon as it hits my stomach I puke it back up. No more aspirin for me!

Take two aspirin and call ......no, don't call.
Wow, and all of these drug companies have been selling me all of this expensive narcotic junk for nothing. All I have to do is take an aspirin and the pain is gone? Explain this then, I take a 325 mg aspirin every morning as a blood thinner for coronary artery disease. Why do I still get butt kicking, mind blowing migraines that won't quit? What an idiot. I pray that the person that wrote that gets some of the worst migraines there are. They will surely sing a different song.

Sadly Hal, it is worse than that. This came from 13 separate studies, there is of course an author of the piece, but the study involves I think about 4000 people (dont quote me cant be bothered to check. A lot anyway).
This is their conclusion. It was big enough to hit all our dailies and the BBC. Usually migraine news turns up in the health supplements.
I have also been on daily aspirin and still wake with migraines. I guess we need to try it their way 900/1000 (hard when they come as 300mg) with a sweet/fizzy drink and see what happens???
I do know of people who are helped by this, they have posted on my FB group.
BUT it isnt that simple. I am aspirin responsive. It is the only pain killer I respond to. Not Ibuprofen, not paracetamol.
BUT the 3 aspirins disnt work for me. Excedrin can if it isnt a whole migraine. So I am guessing i need aspirin and caffeine.
I did ask the neuro, he just nodded.
Drug companies will be ruffled by this info though, might give them a bit of a stir for an hour or so....
But yes Hal, for you and me and hundreds of us, its back to making the drug companies rich I'm afraid.
