Being admitted into hospital tomorrow
Hi,
Well I had enough so went to the ER this morning, due to 8 weeks of migraines and other symptoms. Due to this and the abnormal MRI last year I am being admitted for assessment tomorrow. At least I may know more soon,

The CT Scan was clear yet a MRI March 09 found a small what looked like a blood clot in the pons near my brain stem, yet they are not sure what it was, but now my headaches have increased again they want to re-evaluate me,

This is good that you had the MRI and they can fix you if need be! Wish you my best.

Good luck. I hope all turns out well for you and it most likely will. What types of migraines have you had in the past? With aura or without?

Hi and thanks,
My migraines have been very mixed sometimes with aura and sometimes without, I was diagnosed with complicated migraines many years ago as I had differing neurological symptoms along with the head pain, numbness, twitching, shock sensations, plus visual disturbances, all these I have had on an off since I was a child.
My Neurologist sent me to a neurophycologist (sp) many years ago as I started to have short term memory loss, and loss of a few moments every day, the out come of this was that my migraines are so sever that they where killing parts of my brain, they mapped my brain and could show where the attack was and by asking a battery questions over a period of hours they could show exactly where in the brain the misfires occurred, they explained how a migraine is second cousin to epilepsy.

Wow, I had no idea that migraine and epilepsy were related in any way. I am surprised that it has taken this long, or so it seems, for you to have all of the tests that you need in order to figure out what is going on. Migraines are scary to say the least but I am sure it will put your mind at ease once they figure out what is going on and hopefully you can get some answers and hopefully a solution. If it is just migraine related I don't know what they can do other than medications to ease the symptoms.
In the past two months I have had the dreaded aura without the huge headache afterward but it is still draining and stressful. Will you have someone there with you for support? Good luck again!

I will be thinking about you tomorrow.
Thank goodness that the doctors are willing to admit you and attempt to get to the bottom of what is causing your pain.
I know everything will be just fine.
Take care,
Cindy

Re: Being admitted into hospital tomorrow
Thank you everyone for your well wishes.
After a thorough neuro exam and consult both the doctors and the consultants concluded the the head pains are part of my migraines. They re read the report from my scan done last year and think there is no reason to suspect a tumour, and it is far more likely to be a result of the TA and a blood clot, that was seen. I have no sign of pressure in my head, plus my neuro exam was fine.
They did not see any need to put me thro another scan at this time, they want me to take pain meds when pain starts to see if this will stop the cycle, and if codeine was the only thing that worked for me then that was fine as long as it was taken no more than directed, far better to stop the pain than worry about getting addicted.
An appointment is to be made as a follow up in eight weeks time.
I shall have to digest what was said,
Peter

That is great. I agree with the fact that getting rid of pain is more important than worrying about getting addicted also.

I'm glad there is no tumor. I hope that once you digest it all, you can get some relief. I'm really glad they told you not to worry about addiction. This is where the fine line between dependency and addiction come into play. Depending on something to give you some sort of life is not an addiction. I really hope you get some relief.

Re: Being admitted into hospital tomorrow
Hello again,
I thought an update was in order.
My Neurologist has asked my GP to repeat the brain MRI, this is to be done next Monday morning.
The head pain has been pretty constant, no other symptoms, but he has ordered a new MRI with contrast this time, to see if things have changed from last year.
I am dreading the scan as I am extremely claustrophobic, but know I have to try as I need some answers, if it is bad news there will be nothing they can do as it is in the pons on the brain stem.
One thing I am dreading also is if I wake up on Monday morning with a big M, I am due one about this weekend, do others know if you can take pain meds like codeine if you are having contrast medium?
I am in the UK so I was surprised how quickly the NHS arranged the MRI scan. It is a scary time for me right now but I need answers,
Peter

Re: Being admitted into hospital tomorrow
Peter - Although I'm not claustrophobic in any other situation, MRI's do it for me. Ask for some valium. You can relax. And good luck. Let us know what they find out.

Peter I am curious about your post that mentioned a blood clot and TA's ? Isn't the blood clot something to be concerned about or am I wrong? And aren't TA's mini strokes? I am wondering if the one is causing the other. Let me know how you are doing..good luck!

Thought I would give a canned history,
About 9 years ago I was admitted into hospital with a six week history of headaches and strange neurological symptoms. I could not extend my RH little finger and my RH middle and thumb would only move together, not independent of each other. Also it was noted that my RH grip was weaker than my left. Some numbness in my RH toe and calf area. They suspected either a MS, BT, or TIA.
At the time a full range of bloods and a CT Brain scan was done, and a few days latter a MRI and an MRI with contrast was done, plus MRA. The only finding was very very low B12, a few other tests where done to try and find out why it was so low where done but nothing was found. I had B12 shots weekly then monthly and re tested and told I no longer require them. Most of the symptoms vanished, but I still got bad headaches, my Dr felt these where related to the migraines I had always had.
All was well until 2008 when I started to get a lot of the same symptoms AND very bad nausea. so much so that my weight began to fall by 30 pounds in a matter of weeks!
The nausea remained but the other symptoms, numbness and muscle twitching went over time.
Fast forward to March 2009, I had an type of spaced out feeling, and ended up in hospital again, this was followed by a very bad headache, and other numbness etc, again a CT brain scan was done and nothing was found. However a MRI brain scan revealed a small legion in the pons near my brain stem, the specialist said it looked like a small blood clot.
Since then I have been unable to eat due to nausea. The Drs have looked at GI reasons with scans etc but have found nothing.

Re: Being admitted into hospital tomorrow
All best wishes Peter. Hope it al turns out well and the MRI is not too bad.
I agree, I am claustrophobic and they are horrible.
Wow I didnt think the NHS could shift itself that quickly.
Although 10 yeas ago our local hospital had a Headache clinic (not now)
My GP got me in for a Scan and a neuro visit in 10 days....
Good luck Peter.
