These idiots still don't get it
I was watching a video clip from a news station were they were talking about kids and migraines. This guy who has a Phd and works at a pediatric pain management clinic was talking about ways to deal with them. He talked about individual, family or group psycho therapy. These narcissistic Drs need to have a migraine for a week just to get them to shut up....
By the way, my head has been killing me for days due to a menstrual migraine. I guess I should go get therapy. Maybe that will make the migraine go away.

Yes, it keeps happening. The world is full of idiots. Doctors are the worst kind, they delude not only themselves, but those other idiots that look up to them.
Just watching them can give you and instant M!

Children, just like adults get migraines! And should be treated accordingly. I've had chronic migraines since I was 17. If therepy stopped them, why am I still in so much pain?

People who don't get migraines know nothing about it. I can't count how many times my coworkers or acquaintances will suggest to me that I should try drinking more water.
Oh yeah... I've had chronic migraines for 15 years and all this time I just wasn't drinking enough water! ridiculous

After nearly 20 years of migraine I get exactly where you're coming from.
These are always people who have never experienced a true migraine.
So all I need to do is drink more water?? OMG why didn't I think of that?
I know that some of these people really mean well, but it does get annoying after awhile.
Between relatives and friends I have probably heard them all.
And they know that I research everything on the web and have tried everything that isn't just completely ridiculous.
Anyway, I am always kind with my replies......but sometimes ...well you get the picture.

I know exactly what you mean. My aunt is convinced that I get migraines because of 'eye strain' from using laptops and reading (my eyesight is near perfect). My doctor just puts them down to 'stress', which isn't convincing. When I say my mouth is dry which often brings on migraines, people suggest that I drink more fluids, as if I haven't tried that already. I've had a 30 hour migraine and it's making me miserable

Yep Kate, round up your family and have a therapy session. The pain will just float away.

The most sympathetic doctor Ive seen is one who gets occasional migraines.
He's been great.

The Drs that get migraines and are sympathetic to their patients are few far and between. Most are narcissistic and view people as a number.

Or your doctor tells you you're too emotional and that's why you're getting migraines. If you describe how much constant pain you're in then you're emotional, yet if you don't tell them how awful it is you don't get any real treatment or medicine to help you survive the migraines... that seems to be my latest experience. "You need to see a psychiatrist...." Um no, I'm telling you how bad the pain is and I need something else to try for it so I can go to work among other things.

Re: These idiots still don't get it
You get that response time to see a new doctor because he/she is an idiot.
Even basic medical knowledge of this disease shows that not to be the case.
I have found that doctors are about 50/50.
50% are wunderful caring people who really try to help.
50% are jerks who don't listen and play blame the patient when they don't have the answers.
Our job is to quickly move on from the second type. They won't change and won't help you.
Unfortunately it's pretty much trial and error to find the first kind.

Doctors who get migraines do tend to be the best. There are some good ones out there. If you're searching for a new neuro always check their specialty, it's usually published. Make sure they're a headache specialist or don't bother seeing them.

Migrainegirl, I don't believe that to be true that it is 50 50. There is a higher percentage of Drs who don't give a crap and there are only a low percent of those who do. Anyway, my post was about those who don't obviously get it.Not those that do.

Perhaps you are right and I'm being too charitable, but overall that's been my experience with doctors. ( with neurologists it's been much poorer.)

Re: These idiots still don't get it
I am wondering if a vascular, glandular or GI specialist would not be better for migraines. Migraines are not induced by the brain or brain nerves as brain cells do not cause the pain. M's are caused by blood vessels contracting and then expanding in the brain. So it would seem that a vascular specialist might be better. Also as in my case, migraines are caused by food triggers, so a GI specialist would likely be better to deal with the causes of migraines (low MAO in the GI tract, improper digestion/absorption of vaso-active amines like tyramine). Another option would be an endochrinologist to deal with hormonal levels, gland issues, and blood chemistry.
Seemingly neurologists are the least likely to know anything about the causes of migraines. I saw several neurologists about my headaches and I was mis-diagnosed with sinus, cluster and other types of headaches. I am a male, so as such they are far less likely to diagnose migraines in men (6% of men get M's, and 18% of women). In my case I have also found that stress does not cause M's, and I spent 7 years in therapy for ADHD with a psychiatrist/psychologist pairing. That was when I was properly diagnosed with M's and given an Rx for Zomig to get rid of them when I get them. The best way for me to avoid them is to avoid eating foods high in tannins, MSG, and tyramine. Opiates also cause M's so I avoid those if possible (morphine, codeine, and the like).

I wonder where that drink water thing comes from. When my sister and her husband's child began complaining about headaches and they would tell him to drink more water. They believe that my migraines are caused by my belief in migraines or my mindset or something. So they didn't want their own son to know about the concept of migraines because they believed that a belief in migraines would cause him to get migraines. So when started he getting headache they would tell him he's dehydrated and to drink more water. Nice, huh?

Ask them if they also prescribe water to cure Parkinson's disease, diabetes and cancer?
They have no idea how ludicrous that sounds.

Re: These idiots still don't get it
I think many people's way of processing something is to relate to it. Since mild dehydration headaches can be quite common, that is their advice. I agree there is a big difference between a mild headache that goes away when you re-hydrate and chronic headache/migraine which is treatment-resistant. Best wishes.

They also seriously asked me once if they thought that the fact that I never "outgrew" my migraines has anything to do with my level of immaturity. I said just what you said that it's no different then epilepsy or any other physical disorder and they just rolled their eyes at me. I actually never even talk about this so I don't know why I am now as it's just so frustrating. I think people who actually go so far as to not understand things that exist outside of their own realm of experience are just jerks. I don't think epilepsy doesn't exist just because I don't have it. You know?

Re: These idiots still don't get it
I also have to laugh at the suggestion of not drinking enough water- since I have an autoimmune disease that causes me to be very thirsty ALL the time, I know that I drink more water than most people out there, and somehow I still have chronic migraines. So, if water was a magical "cure" I should have been cured a long time ago!

Re: These idiots still don't get it
I get tired of people trying to diagnose why I might me having migraines and that there should be something out there to "cure" them.I also get the usual, "have you tried this," BS. It seems like they are more bothered by my migraines than Iam. I just chalk it up to as arrogance and selfishness.
Fullen, unbelievable that someone would think that a migraine would have something to do with a character trait. Definitly a jerk...

I think most people are just trying to be helpful. But those who try to dismiss it or belittle those who have it are total idiots and jerks besides. They should be summarily treated as such. I recommend " as you clearly are not up on the medical research on this serious physiological condition, I recommend you keep such ill informed opinions to your self. The millions of people who suffer from this neurological condition would appreciate it. "
