advice on amitriptyline please
Hey
So I've been on amitriptyline 10mg for 2 weeks now and I'm finding a weird effect.
I take it in the evening (between 6.30pm-8pm) and find I am sleeping as usual (I.e. waking up at night not being drowsy if I make a toilet trip). I am also fine when I wake up.
But, around 11am/midday I get really spaced out and exhausted for the entire afternoon...
That's a bit of a delayed reaction?
Should I keep taking it at the same time and hope the side effects wear off or should I try taking it first thing in the morning?! Could it be that it takes 15 hours to make me spaced out...?
Any thoughts/experiences?

Re: advice on amitriptyline please
Hi,
I have been taking this drug for over a week and a half. It is really weird because I was going to ask a similar question. I often take the pill (10mg) at about 7pm and havnt had any trouble getting up ect. However I also get very tired in the middle of the day which doesnt often happen. My head feels heavy and typing on my computer becomes a chore ect. My only other side effect has been a dry mouth!!
How are you finding it? Has it releived your migraines/headaches at all?
Im going to write an update soon.
Jo

Re: advice on amitriptyline please
Thanks jo! Glad to know it's not just me.
I'm tempted to try it much later tonight like 11pm and see if the spaced out feeling happens later too.
If so I will consider trying it in the morning!
It hasn't helped yet. My migraine doctor said it's too soon and also probably too low a dose but that 10mg cab be sufficient for some people. He advised to wait until side effects wear off and then increase it by 5 or 10mg each time I get tolerant to the side effects.
He gave me an example of different people it had worked for art completely different dosages. I think I'm supposed to keep increasing it until it works or I can't take the side effects. But I'm obviously not tolerant to the side effects yet so not going to increase it!

Re: advice on amitriptyline please
I took it for several years and I was soooo draggy! I'd need a long nap every afternoon. I finally tapered off of it (hard to do, I had to cut back a little at a time or I couldn't sleep), and my energy level was much much better. That is definitely a side effect of the amitriptyline.

I was like a zombie the whole time I was on it. A week or so after I stopped taking it, it was like a fog that had been hanging over me lifted!
I believe it's a common side effect.

Re: advice on amitriptyline please
Hmmm well being a zombie the whole time is no good, however I do want to attempt to give my body time to adjust to it incase it does.
Taking it at 9am didn't work, I was just exhausted from 12 till 5pm then spaced out from 6.
So my next idea is to buy a pill cutter and half it to 5mg and take it around 4pm tomo.
If my body can't even adjust to 5mg I clearly won't adjust to 10 or more!

Re: advice on amitriptyline please
I'm taking 50mg of amitryptiline. I can sleep like 17 hours and be still tired when I wake up. It takes a lot for the body to adjust to the drug and on top of that it's not working(been taking it for two years).
I wake up randomly at night to drink water, so I have to keep a two litter bottle next to my bed because I drink lots of it. Thirst goes away after a while and returns randomly.
I'd recommend to sleep no more than 10 hours because sleeping too much can cause you more migraines.
