Naproxen
Has anyone tried this for pain relief??
Just been given it to try.
If yeah, how did you find it? Any help to you? Did you have any unpleasant side effects?

Re: Naproxen
Gives me major stomache, but then I damaged my stomach long ago with huge aspirin doses.
Not effective for M but for minor HAs, yeah, not bad.

Re: Naproxen
Sodium Naproxen is Aleve in the US. I assume you mean the same thing.
It is a pretty standard OTC here. It is mainly an anti-inflammatory (as opposed to pain reliever per se). I think it works well for muscle aches and things like that. In my experience it wont releive a headache. But it may work well in conjunction with other pain relievers. My doctor told me to take one with the Oxy I take for pain as he said there is an inflammatory component to migraine. I have never had any side effects or stomach issues with Aleve.

Re: Naproxen
My neuro had me begin to take Naproxin with Neurotin, because they both make the other more bio-available. For me, it means that they both relieve pain better together than either one will alone, but even together they are not enough to abort an attack

Re: Naproxen
Naproxen alone has never done much good for me. I have had stomach issues with it a few times though. Good Luck!

Re: Naproxen
Thanks all for the feedback.
I gave it a go but it didn't even touch the head pain.
No nasty side effects tho!

Naprosyn is an NSAID (non=steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-like Ibuprofen) which can irritate your stomach.
It is also in the drug, Treximet, which is naprosyn and Imitrex combined. I have tried taking the two separately but it doesn't work the way the combo drug does.

Lesley!
I've always wondered what NSAID stood for but was too lazy to ask or look it up!
Thank you

Re: Naproxen
Yes, I used Naproxen for a while, but as anti-inlammatory for another condition. IT has badly upset my stomach after few days, so I stopped it.
It relieves milder headache but it did not work for migraine for me.
Later I tried it again but due to upset stomach I gave it up.

I agree with Leslie, the Treximet works good, but for me it's pretty aggresive on me.
You can get coupons on line from their web site too. I just printed a $50 one and my co-pay is $35. so that was a blessing

Sherri, I'm always happy to have someone agree with me! (wink, wink). I forgot that there were coupons for Treximet. Thanks for posting that!

It has no effect on migraines.
It's just like everything else. No over-the-counter drug is strong enough to cure a migraine.

Re: Naproxen
To the best of my knowledge, Naproxen it not over the counter in the UK.
Either way, I'm not going to bother with it again. The only thing that shifts it for me is sleep. And lots of it.

I was so disappointed in Treximet. Of course the pills I had were only 85mg of sumatriptan & 500mg naproxen.. and I use 100mg Imitrex tablets... I read a long time ago - that someone on this site takes their imitrex with OTC naproxen. Can't recall who it was though.
Anyway it naproxen doesn't work on headaches/migraines for me. The only OTC that works is Excedrin --which only works on headaches, not migraines.

Re: Naproxen
I take frova with OTC aleve, and was told to pair my aleve with my neurotin, since it makes both the meds more bioavailable.

re:naproxen
hi,
i use a prescription dose of 500 mg. naproxen with relpax 40 mg.
i was feeling tightness in my chest after years of imitrex. so i had to stop using it and that was sad because it really worked! i have tried many triptans. now am using the relpax. i hate it . i always have to take 2 pills to get any relief. and sometimes it does not provide any relief at all.
was told to try otc naproxen for help with my hysterectomy surgery pain. 220 mg. -- did not even touch the pain. had to use hydrocodone from my primary care dr.
have not had any stomach issues with it - naproxen.
