Still working....
I haven't been courteous enough to report to you guys , but the doubling of the Verapamil to 240 mg. a day is still working.
Since I am 59, I have thought that maybe the age thing that I thought was a myth might be kicking it too...
But my neuro is still surprised that the V. worked so quickly with me... his words were "I've never had it work like a bullet before..."
I am just grateful for the almost nine months of monster relief. I get 'small' flares that I can handle with aspirin. That tells you how much better it is - I was taking 10 mgs Maxalt every day for months the day before I saw that dr.
So I just want to tell you all I love you and am still praying for you - and that their IS hope...
Holly
ps. I am going to try to hang around a little more... I still have trouble sitting at the computer, but I miss you guys...!

Re: Still working....
Fantastic news Holly. I am getting nowhere fast, and am a year older, so age thing hindering not helping.
I am pleased for you and hope the rest of us can have some luck soon.
You have given us hope.

verapamil
I just read wikipedia's description of this drug. It's a vasodilator. Triptans constrict the blood vessels. Why do they both work? Is it because verapamil is being used a preventative?
Anyway, it's great that you found something that works and I'm glad you shared that good news with us.

Re: Still working....
Holly - I am also 59 (for another month anyway). Wouldn't that be something if it was the age thing and not the verapamil after all? Keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: Still working....
I can't figure out why it worked. This is the first neuro I have been to that actually LOOKED at me when I talked, and listened. Apparently 240 is a fairly high dose, twice what I had been taking . He said some people can SEEM to be having the blood pressure in control, according to the numbers, but for that individual, for some reason they need a lot more control....
All I know is , for NOW, I am getting a little relief- it may be over tomorrow. It's something to try. They problem is your dr. may say "oh your numbers are fine" and he may be hard to convince to try it.
These days it's my back that is so bad, getting to when I need a cane or walking stick much of the time. The back doctor is not one that will listen -- he says "you just have to live with it" .... yeah, easy for him to say, huh?
God bless all, love and prayers,
Holly

Re: Still working....
Holly- I would never accept "just have to learn to live with it" crap. Maybe UNTIL you find relief because you have no choice.
I know what you mean about the blood pressure stuff. I'm bringing it up to my neuro though. I have an appointment on Friday.

Re: Still working....
Holly, That is the best news! I hope it continues for a long time. Now that I think of it, I have a friend who did really well with Verapamil. I am on a pretty high dose of Inderal. I may try switching and see what happens.

Hi Holly,
I'm so happy to hear success stories! I wish I could find a good preventative too.
My daddy takes Verapamil for high BP, I should stole him some pills
Just kidding...I can't try beta blockers as my BP tends to be too low.
Take care
