Re: Genes. Have they found one...
Pen,
From the news stories, this looks huge! There seems, however to have been a mistake in releasing this today. It should have gone out tomorrow. The journal article on which it's based won't even be available until tomorrow. I'm waiting to get a copy of it so I can learn more!

I had to put two and two together myself as far as the Chinese food and MSG are concerned. I would get really weird after I ate it. A migraine for sure but my head felt as if it wasn't even mine and I had a definite personality change.
Does anyone know what else has MSG in it so I can absolutely avoid those foods??

Is this the same glutamate? MSG???
Glutamate is a brain chemical, does this mean if we imbibe we increase its level.
Can some of our "science minded" people comment please?
I have FMS and IBS and Glutamate is implicated here too....so much for co morbid...

Yes Pen, MSG is glutammate and it's widely used in packed and canned food.
It's practically impossible to avoid it unless you eat only fresh and organic foods.
Someone in the past tried a msg-free diet and found a huge difference with migraines.
I have just found out that I am NOT celiac and was happy about the news, now I will start to cope with MSG

Re: Genes. Have they found one...
Thanks Ivy. I have missed you. How are you....Celiac is hard to deal with, takes a lot of getting used to. Good news then.
MSG, I am not so sure what it is in because I understand they use different terms.
I hope once this news is properly out there, we might get some advice.

glutamate and MSG
When I read this post, I emailed a Migraine specialist and researcher to be sure of what I wanted to say. He confirmed that the neurotransmitter glutamate is not same as monosodium glutamate, MSG, in foods. Here's what he said:
"There's no evidence that I'm aware of that ties MSG ingestion to increased glutamate transmission and/or increased cortical excitability."
I'm not enough of a scientist to explain this, but thought you might like to know.

common migraine
The newspaper articles I've read all mentioned the gene is associated with "common migraine". The paper itself isn't available yet so I can't see what it says. But are they using the outdated term "common migraine" vs. "classical migraine"? I thought it was now migraine with/without aura. It would be a shame if this gene is only associated with migraine without aura.

Thanks Teri. So not sounding as if there is anything we can do to help ourselves at the moment...

Re: Genes. Have they found one...
No, that's not how they're using the term "common Migraine." They mean the more common forms of Migraine as opposed to the rarer forms such as hemiplegic Migraine.
The full journal article is available only by subscription or paying for the individual article. I paid for a copy of it to write my article about it. If you want to read it, I just put my article up: New Discovery on Migraine and Genetics.
