Hemiplegic Migraine
Greetings. Last Sunday our healthy 12 year old son was admitted to the ICU following a stroke-like incident that ultimately (by process of exclusion) was diagnosed as Hemiplegic Migraine. He was released on Thursday with no neurological symptoms, and intermittant head and backaches of varying intensity that may be attributable to the lumbar puncture (spinal).
We are newbies in this realm, and eager to learn more. Any suggestions regarding the following would be appreciated: 1. best organizations to offer information and support and 2. ways to identify reputable Migraine specialists in our area (Buffalo/Western New York). We are currently hooked up with a very competent neurologist who seems to be educated in this diagnosis, but we still want to know if there are others in area with greater knowledge.
Thank you.

Re: Hemiplegic Migraine
there is nothing in NW PA....UPMC Pittsburgh may have some help.
Cleveland Clinic's chief migraine guy is very nice. I do not know if he treats kids or not. Outside of the area, Johns Hopkins or Mass Gen would be another step. finding someone that works well with kids will be tough.
Buffalo has some good neuros according to my neighbor, a neuro himself.
good luck!
