Migraine help for a newbie of sorts? Empty Migraine help for a newbie of sorts?

Hello to all,
I am 27 and have had migraines with aura since the age of 13. Over this time period I have tried a wide range of meds with little help. Most just make me feel worse. The most help I have ever gotten is by taking magnesium on a regular basis and taking 1200mg of ibuprofen on the onset of a migraine. I have never been to a neurologist just your basic family doctor that threw various unhelpful medication at me. I have tried imitrex, anti seizure meds, and blood pressure med. About a two years ago I had multiple migraines after surgery. I tried around five of the new migraine medications then with no help. For most of my life I would only have a migraine every 3 months or so, but for the last year or so it has been much worse. I sometimes have periods where I will have a migraine every day for two weeks.I know some of my triggers are MSG, aspartame, and Nitrates. Needless to say I am now desperate to find help. I am curious to know what to expect from a neurologist and if it is worth my time and money. I also just started taking Fever few and B2 having read these may help. I would appreciate advice from anyone. Best of luck to all.

Post  dawn.binks Mon Jul 19, 2010 2:22 pm

hi, a neuro is definitely worth seeing, i presume youre not in the uk as you talk about having to pay to see a neuro. i didnt see a neuro for the first 9 years of migraine and have been under one now for 8 years, when you find a good one stick with them and they will work away with you finding a good drug that will help you manage you migraines, i also found aspartame triggered a mig and also that some triptans contain it!!!! good luck hopefully you may find someone on here who lives nr you who can recommend one. good luck!!

I am in the US and have insurance through the hospital I work for. I just have to pay a lot before the coverage will be decent. I have a feeling there will be a lot of expensive test and drugs to try in the beginning, but it would be worth it for some peace. Thanks for your reply.

It's definitely worth seeing a Neuro but make sure he is a headache specialist or you will just get very frustrated. I've seen lots of Neuro's during my migraine life and there are good ones and bad ones. Ones that get migraines themselves are the best as they understand first hand what we are dealing with.

Just remember, they work for YOU. You can fire them and move on to another that is more empathetic if you get a jerk.

As far as the drugs go, it is a big experiment to find what will work for you. Everyone is different so you may have to try several different ones before you find what works.
