OT - Our Dog Died
Well yesterday SUCKED.
One of our dogs died. She was a small shitzu (runt of the litter). She was sick last winter, but made a great recovery over the past 4 or 5 months, but I guess it was her time. Saturday she was very lethargic; stopped eating and drinking and was weak and clingy. My son stayed up with her all night and around 1:30 Sunday afternoon she died. I buried her in our “pet cemetery” under a stand of three pines in the corner of our yard. She joined two guinea pigs already there.
She was a real sweetheart. I can’t believe how upsetting this is. We all knew it was a matter of time. She had bad kidneys for several years and after last winter’s scare I think her recovery took our guard down.
Pets – They sure get under your skin don’t they?

I really feel for you. Animals really do become part of your family and when they die it can be devastating.
I love my 2 cats like mad and I would be devastated if anything would happen to them.
RIP doggy.

Re: OT - Our Dog Died
My heart goes out to you.
Last month we almost lost our 13 year old Golden.
At her age I know it is only a matter of time.
I am passionate about dogs, and animals. Dogs really bond, they are part of the family.
It is a bereavement.
It took me so long to get over our last doggie loss, I dread this one.
I totally empathise, there is nothing I can say, except, I understand.
Take care.

Re: OT - Our Dog Died
I'm so sorry for you and your family, Dan. The death of a beloved pet leaves such a void in our lives.
We lost one of ours about 2 months ago and just found out our remaining dog has some heart/lung issues. The grief is so overwhelming and the emotional strain of their sickness is difficult to bear.
I guess all of this is pretty fresh in my heart, too, because your loss brings tears to my eyes.
Thinking of you and your family.

I feel your pain, I've been through it with many animals (dogs, horses, birds etc.) and as a huge lover of all animals, I send my deepest condolences to you, and hope that time eases the pain, and that you have many happy memories.

I am so so sorry for your loss...animals are therapeutic and are like children to our family. They leave us with some wonderful memories and yes the unconditional love they give us is something more humans should learn from.
Remember the good times and you will be stronger over time. As you know grieving is part of the painful process it will get better.
I have put down three dogs this year, none were mine two sisters dogs and a nieces. I have 5 dogs, one is 12 a German shepherd and he is going down hill fast another is 15 a wiener dog, I am dreading that day. We love them so much.
My thoughts and prayers are with you Dan, may god bless....you, your family and your beautiful little friend...

Animals give so much of themselves and only ask for kindness in return.
My sympathies to you and your family. The little guy was blessed to have been loved by you.

Re: OT - Our Dog Died
I am very sorry to hear that, it hurts very bad to lose our furry friends and it makes a void in the house and our lives. All we can do is spoil our pets as much as possible. We then get more peace when they leave us knowing we gave them a great life.
After losing so many pets I went for over five years without any. My feelings were I can't lose them if I don't have them. But they seem to wiggle into our lives one way or another. Now I have a new pup but with the knowledge if I am lucky he will be around maybe 15 years.

Re: OT - Our Dog Died
Thank you for the kind replies.
Today's been hard. I can't believe this; I can go to a funeral and not shed a tear, but a dog dies and I'm a wreck.
She was a gift to my wife. When we moved to the city we're living in now, my wife started talking about getting a new puppy. She found a shitzu breeder and picked out the only female of the litter. But she was on-call at the hospital and sure enough was called in. Her car wasn't off our street and I was grabbing kids go get that puppy. She was a tiny little thing (being the runt), but a sweetheart no less.
Appropriately, my wife was holding her when she died.
OK, I'll stop.

Dan, I am so sorry for your loss.
Like everyone who wrote above, I'm a huge animal lover. Our 3 dogs have been my migraine's closest companions over the years.
It just devastates me to think of their mortality...
Becky, you are also in my thoughts..I'm so sad to hear of your loss, too.
Thank G-d for memories...

Dan, my heart goes out to you and your family. I lost my dog years ago in college and to this day I get tears just thinking about him. Dogs are wonderful pets and companions. We want one very badly but with us all either in school or working it is not working out.
Keep all your dogs wonderful memories in your heart and know we are all thinking of you and your family at this time.

Re: OT - Our Dog Died
Dan,
same here. I get much more emotional about animals than about humans (with the exception of my husband). I think it has got to do with the fact that animals never disappoint or let you down. Their love is truly unconditional. All they want in return is a bit of kindess as an other poster already mentioned.

Dan,
I am so sorry for your loss. It is a heartbreaking time.
(Also sorry for the delayed reply, I was just reading Risa's post on the misc side and it reminded me that I never got round to posting on your thread.)
I hope your days are getting more bearable.

Re: OT - Our Dog Died
Thanks all for the kind comments. All is well, although it's still feels strange only putting down 2 dog dishes instead of 3.
I can't say we'll never have pets again. Even though their life span is relatively short compared to ours (10-12 for small dogs), They give way more than they ever ask from us. Besides, they're too much fun to have around!
