Wow Chris, I had no idea. SPAM came to England during WW2....No I wasn't born...my mum told me.
It was a mixed blessing in a country short of everything and everything on ration.
But as far as I know we only have one or two kinds over here.

But a whole festival, ~Well who knew?
I am sharing this with the family.

I find the Spam carving contests to be the height of artistic expression. Fun with canned meat (?).

In my younger and much poorer days, when not having any money was a huge issue, Spam was an integral part of my boyfriend's and my diet. Today I won't touch the stuff, but it did get me through some very tough times. I became very creative in different ways to use Spam.

My grandmother used it all the time when I visited. I hate the stuff, it's mostly salt and fat. And what's even more disturbing is there are generic cans of spam like meat that probably taste even worse.

eeeeeeeeee! Don't even want to think about that!

Mom used to make spam with pancakes occasionally for supper (mostly on Sunday nights). The thought of it now makes me nauseous.

I was going to embed that video but I didn't know how many Python fans were here. You either love them or hate them. I have liked them since high school.

I kind of outgrew them, but since we are Spamming......

My mum told me that in WW2 when she was in the ATS it was "chips with everything" (english chips...fat fries).
Then the "yanks" came and it was 101 ways with SPAM.....LOL
It was very welcome. But I think by 1946 they were all a bit Spammed out.

It was introduced to Hawaii by the troops during WWII and they went nuts over it and still do. One culture got sick of it and another loves it.

Wow, I can remember when my grandmother used to fry spam for breakfast.

It sounds so revolting now, but we ate it as kids.

I guess we liked it, I really can't remember!

Really haven't thought about spam in years.

Something funny I forgot to tell you guys.

When my parents were here a couple of weeks ago, I was going thru my recipes and trying to find something really good to fix my Dad for dinner the first night they were here.

I had a couple of things in mind, but I decided to ask him and fix what her really wanted.

All he wanted was fish sticks and french fries!

So....that was easy enough.

I did get the best quality fish sticks I could find though.

I hate the minced fish ones. They have to be cut from real fillets.

Anyway, so he was just thrilled with his dinner and I got him some ice cream for dessert.

Got off pretty easy, didn't I? LOL

I loved the site! They now have a roasted turkey spam. Who knew? And I looked at the recipes - there's one for "spamakopita" (hilarious!) and all kinds of ways to eat spam. And the event looks really huge! I never imagined. I think with all the additives and nitrates it must have, I would have a headache for a week. I can't remember if I ever ate it, but I enjoyed checking out the site. Thanks!

It's actually just dog food that they package up for people and call it something different. It still tastes and smells the same. Except your vet would warn to not feed it to your dog.

I can eat it. Dont dislike it once in a while and it has never given me a headache or anything.
I am surprised it still sells as well as it does though.

I feel the same way about canned corned beef hash. YYYYYYuuuuk! I remember camping with my parents when I was about 8-9 years old and my Mom fed us corned beef hash. It looked and smelled like cat food. So gross! She still swears it is good but I won't touch it.

Now THAT I hear Alli....yuk!!!

I make it from scratch using corned beef from our local butcher that cures and smokes it right there. Add some fresh sliced red patatos and onions. Good stuff, nothing even close to canned.

Don't forget the stewed tomatoes with the hash!

Haven't tried the 'maters with it yet but sounds good.

Anything made from scratch is better than canned. And I'm sure it looks better too!

And fresh scratch is way better tasting then canned scratch.
