demerol question
For years I have been getting demerol, toradol and phenigin injections as needed for my worse headache. Recently I have noticed it helps and about 3 hours later its back. That is new for me. I get 100mg of demerol. Have for prob 15 years.
I really think my doesage isnt working anymore. I am wondering what others get for mgs. My nurse that gives it to me always acts like I cant give you more that is the maxiumum. I have never asked her to go check with the dr.

Re: demerol question
I`ve only had one Demerol shot.It was 50mg. It took the pain away for one day and then the next day the pain was still there.

Demerol Question
Hi - I am new here and decided to join in by replying.
In addition to migraines I have cronic pericarditis stemming from the flu that go in my heart 3 years ago. I have about 3 hospital stays a year due to chest pain and blood pressure issues. I have to have IV antibiotics and pain meds for approx 5 days to clear up the flares.
I get a max of 50mg demerol iv every 4 hours. Once or twice they let me have 75mgs but normally my cardiologist says thats enough - or he will let me have 75mgs every 6 hours. I find the every four hours works better for me.
Are you getting this IV or IM. Usually the IM lasts longer and they do a bigger dose - IV works quicker but can't have as much.
I know some docs add benadryl to kinda kick start the relief. Feel Better!

Re: demerol question
Could be your body is building up a tolerence to it? How often do you get it?
I'm allowed 75mg Demerol/60 Toradol/Visteral three times a month max. I notice that the longer between injections I can go, the better I respond to it.
One month I had kidney stones along with migraines I was on so much pain medication that I had rebound headaches....the demerol would just cause more headaches and I had to go without for a while.
It really stinks when it's all you respond too...I have some luck with dilauded, but my local hospital doesn't carry it. Good luck to you.

Re: demerol question
I do Toridal injections at home. They help, but if I do them to much I think my tolerance builds up.
I also have Tramidal. My Neuro. Would not give it to me. But I asked my PCP, he gave me a script for it. I only use it when I have no other options and it keeps me out of e.r.

Re: demerol question
Demerol is not commonly used anymore because the half life is shorter then the frequency of use....meaning....it's efficacy runs out before you are allowed to take your next dose.
You can't take it more often then every four hours yet the pain killing effects end between two and three hours after taking it.
You need to ask your doctor about a longer acting narcotic.

Re: Demerol
I am allowed two demerol/benedryl shots per month.
I get 100mg of each and have gotten that dose for the last 10 years.
Remember a time though when I got a shot every week for a month and I could tell that it wasn't working as well for me by the last shot.
Maybe that is what's happening to you, I don't know.
Many times when I have had to go to unfamiliar places to get a shot, they act like 100mg is alot.
I do remember someone on here years ago getting 150mg though.
I would talk it over with your doctor.
He or she might want to try a different narcotic shot for awhile and see how you do.
Good Luck!
Cindy
