oxygen to help migraines

Post  melody27888 on Sat Apr 26, 2014 4:01 am

Recently when I went to the dentist for a cleaning, I was getting a migraine. I told the dental hygienist about it and she offered to let me wear an oxygen mask and told me that it sometimes helps migraines. I have heard of this before. A friend of my sister also gets migraines and her mother had an oxygen tank at home. She breathed in some oxygen for about 15 minutes and felt better afterwards.

While the oxygen didn't make my head pain completely go away, it did help me feel better, and I didn't have to take any of my imitrex that evening.

I do notice that whenever I have a migraine, I have trouble breathing. It feels like the blood vessels around my nasal passages are swollen and I just can't get enough air in.

I wonder does anyone know how hard it would be to get an oxygen tank? Are they expensive? Does anyone have any experience with this to offer any advice? I know nothing about this but if it would help, I'm going to consider it.

You can get one with a doctor's prescription.  Home health services and I think even Walgreens carry them. But you will need a prescription from your doctor.  I have been thinking about trying it.

Many years ago I was on the local volunteer first aid squad. I tried using the 02 with a respirator that pushed the 02 in under pressure. It did seem to help some so I asked my doctor. He said the theory of extra 02 had some merit and gave me a prescription to have a tank at home. I was to use it with a cannula though not a respirator. It never really seemed to do much so I gave it up after several months.

O2

I find that O2 does give me some relief, even if my sats are normal.  I had a concentrator with a 25 foot hose on it, so I could keep it in a room away from my bedroom (the noise aggravated my headaches).

more input for you: i went to an urgent care center about 25 years ago and asked for oxygen, which they provided. nothing ventured, nothing gained. it did nothing, but now i know what i have is NOT cluster headaches, for sure. this is a standard treatment for those unfortunate people, and can work wonders.

i'm glad it helps some "regular" migraine folks. dianne

O2 works wonders for cluster HA and helps some people w/ migraine too. I tried the cluster protocol, which is to breathe high pressure O2 through a non-rebreather mask for ~20 minutes. I tried a few times and it didn't help. Interestingly, there have been several studies w/ migraineurs taking hyperbaric O2 and they have all shown that it is effective. Now if only I had a hyperbaric chamber...

Platypus that is really interesting about the hyperbaric chamber. I've always thought that it would be a good treatment for migraine but of course it is horribly expensive even to get one treatment at a hospital and not all hospitals have them.
