any painkillers as injections? Empty any painkillers as injections?

Post  lizzy100 Thu Mar 07, 2013 1:25 pm

ok im new to all this, and noone answered my first post but i'll try again.
I had a really bad headache today and my eyes started to hurt and was sensitive to sound, paracetamol did nothing. i started to think it was a migraine (still new to how i tell?), and took a triptan. It has taken at least half an hour to work, but feel better now thankfully.
I was just wondering if there are triptans or painkillers that you can get as injections or something that work quicker?
im trying to keep a migraine diary, i only had my last migraine a couple of days ago Shocked

I think there is injectable imitrex. Not sure if you have to got to the hospital for it.
Am pretty sure you do for injectable pain killers. I have not tried them.

If your triptan gave relief in 1/2 hour consider yourself very very lucky.
Most of us get little relief at all.

You might get differing advice, I know that there is injectible Immitrex, but IDK about its use overseas (guessing, based on the use of paracetamol). I've tried both varieties available in the US, the needle and the needle-less, and if I were to use them, I'd go with the needle in a heartbeat.

The needle is smaller than an insulin needle, and I never bruised with it, but the other used a futuristic high speed spray. If you flinch, it wouldn't get the med below the skin, and you'd waste it spraying it on, rather than injecting it. Also, it left a nasty bruise on both me and my husband, since we've both tried it.

In addition to injectable, some come in nasal sprays or dissolving pills. It'll probably depend on where you live as to what is available. However, 30 minute onset is very very good. Pills usually take about 90-120 minutes for me to work! Of course there are opiates that come in injectable, but if Triptans work, a doctor wouldn't prescribe that. Best wishes.

I know some doctors do give at home torodol injections.

There is also Stadol nasal spray that works well and really fast for some people.

Stadol is pretty much like Nubain.

I think it is a synthetic narcotic type pain med and I know Nubain in injection form works really well for me with much less recovery time the next day.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

iv had injected opiate type pain killers before but was more thinking triptans. Yea i believe they do nasal triptan sprays here but dont know if theyd be any faster?
yea half an hour doesnt sound that long but think is i normally wait several hours before taking it (which i know your not meant to) but because im not sure whether it is a migraine or not. and by the time i realise it is and take something, its normally really bad Rolling Eyes

So go you get both headaches and migraines which in the beginning are the same? That must be tough. Depending on the frequency, some would say to just take the Triptan every time. Its less likely to work on just a headache, but as long as you aren't taking it too often or would run short for when you need them for a migraine, it doesn't have too many downsides.

If it was me and the episodes were less than a couple times a week, I'd discuss with a doctor about taking an analgesic plus triptan each time. Yes, typically Triptans work better when taken early, but some find it ok to take them later. How often do you get headaches & migraines? Best wishes.

Zomig comes in a nasal spray and as a dissolvable pill. Sumavil dosepro is a needless injection (triptan) and it works pretty fast. I feel the "chemical burn" in my muscles in my neck within minutes of the injection. If you try that one, pinch a section of skin on your stomache for the injection site. I've found that to be the least painful way.

As others have said, there is injectible Imitrex. DHE-45 also comes in an injectible form. Toradol and other pain meds come in injectibles. Of course the strong opiate pain meds (Dilaudid, Morphine, etc.) come in injectible form, but you'd probably have to go the the E.R. for that.

I hope you find something that works!
