Hi guys
newbie here! I have been 'loosely' diagnosed with complex migraine which runs in the family, after having an attack with loss of speech and other symtoms a few weeks back. I am flying away on my hols in couple of weeks time and am concerend It may cause problems as it does with my mother (she is on pizotifen) as I have not been put on any meds (yet). I always feel kinda woozy when I fly but am now really concerned that after my recent attack, it may turn into something horrible.... anyone know of anything i could take eithe OTC or even better something natural which could possibly help prevent the pressure problems?
hope you can help

It is fairly common for migraineurs to get headaches when deplaning. I think you probably know that nothing sold OTC is worth a damn for migraines and as for natural remedies, eh, sorry. You do not have a migraine abortive? Ask your doctor for a sample. Something fast acting like the Maxalt tongue melt or Sumavel.

Additionally, stay hydrated during the trip. I don't know why, but that really helps me.

I often pop an advil/ibuprofen and have a small amount of caffeine at the beginning of the flight, which sometime helps prevent my complicated migraines.

But as the previous poster said, you really need an abortant, and possibly a preventative as well.

There are ear plugs that help with the pressure change, but they will not prevent a migraine, they just keep you from having the discomfort in your ears while landing. They're called earplanes, and I find them at my local pharmacy (maybe different for you, guessing you're UK based from your use of 'hols')

I have found that hyperventilating helps when flying. Not sure why, and it doesn't prevent the migraine entirely. But the entire trip I just breath as if I'm upset/excited and the migraines is at a "normal" pain level and not off the charts. Also helps a lot with nausea.

I have historically had trouble with flying causing migraines. I think mostly due to rapid pressure changes on landing. But the loud PA systems and bad seats seem to contribute too. I recommend a good set of headphones. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. And try to walk around and stretch if its a long flight.
