Amitriptyline headaches

Post  joshp on Sun Nov 21, 2010 3:35 am

I have been on amitriptyline for 2 and a half weeks, and almost every day since I have had a headache. I assume it is the amitriptyline doing this.

I know a number of you have tried this drug, so I am interested in your views.

Should I stop taking it, or will the daily headaches go away once my body gets used to the drug?

Josh

If that is new and you did not have daily headaches before, then I would definitely be concerned. You should contact your doctor and ask to discontinue. I did not have that reaction (but then my headaches were so often I might not have been able to tell). But everyone is different. You definitely don't want to take anything that is making your headaches worse.

No, it didn't increase my headaches. It changed my mood and made me irritable, but not headachy.

You might call your Dr. So many of the drugs that are supposed to help us actually have "headache" as a side effect.

It sure gave me headaches. I dont get headaches. I didnt have headache. Not like that.
These were "headaches". I get "pain".
Migraines, myofascial pain, but the only time I get "headaches" is if I get a cold or something like.

The ami gave me headaches all the time. I put it down to the oversleeping.
They wiped me out. I was like a zombie until about 2pm.every day.
I lasted 8 weeks and then the GP took me off them

Did nothing for the migraines and just more pain.

They seem to give them to everyone with migraine/IBS.
So far I dont personally know anyone that has been helped.
Perhaps you will be the first.

Thanks for the replies.

I decided to keep taking it for another week or so to see how it went. But then when it came time to put the pills in my mouth, I couldn't do it (knowing that I'd probably be in pain again the next day).

So I stopped taking them yesterday, and today, miraculously, I have no headache! So I won't be taking any more.

It's me again. I stopped taking the ami on the weekend, and for the past three days I've had nausea and headaches on and off. I wonder if this is anything to do with coming off the amitriptyline? Or perhaps it's something else.

Did anyone else have side effects after stopping amitriptyline treatment?

That is one of those you are supposed to tapper off of. But it depends how long you were taking it and how big the dose was. But I have read of many people having a hard time getting off it after they had been on it a while.
