Where is my ice hat? Empty Where is my ice hat?

Post  joshp Thu Oct 21, 2010 12:35 am

I can get very effective temporary relief by putting an ice-pack against my head. The problem with this is that ice-packs are generally hard rectangular things, meaning I can only hold it against a small part of my head.

When I get a migraine I often fantasise about having an ice hat. I imagine it would be some kind of hat that you keep in the freezer, full of ice-pack stuff. You would wear it on your head (obviously) and let the coolness blissfully numb your head.

Unfortunately no such thing exists. I should patent the idea. I would call it the 'Ice Cap'.

Who else would buy one? Who wants to go and manufacture this product?

Sounds good to me. I could use one right now!

Currently, I have a wet bandana tied tight around my head.

It would be nice to find a gel that would stay soft, even when it has been in the freezer, for your Ice Cap.

There is already one of these on sale here in the UK and it is on Amazon I think.
There is also another one which looks less like some sort of torture device and could be used under a cap, so that on better days one could venture outside in it. And not look like a total idiot. I hear they are pretty good.

Wow. But 'migracap'? Ice Cap is such a cooler name.

Pity they are so expensive, otherwise I'd order one.

I agree on both counts. If my friend gets his out there I will let everyone know.
He is in USA, but I will possibly get him to send some over.
It is not out there yet. He isnt too good (CFS) so who knows.
He was doing it to try to help me.

I have a flexible cold pack from my physical therapists office. It comes in different sizes. It is called the ultimate cold pack and you can find more information on it at www.ecoldpack.com. It is sold to PT offices and other places that do rehab therapy. You might be able to find it at a PT office in your area. It has a gel inside and I can wrap it around any part of my body that needs it. One of the best purchases I have ever made!

Hi All,

When I was in a pain clinic, the clinic often used ice for pain. There was one that some headache sufferers liked dubbed "the superman cap" it looked kind of like the hat a superhero would wear. I found a good picture of it here: Scroll down to the cranial or migraine cap. I usually preferred the long neck wrap though, because the weight bothered me.

Good luck.

When we were kids my bother used to take a cloth hat (like fishermen wear), wet it in the sink and then put it in the freezer. He would wear that hat when mowing the lawn and other yard work in the summer to keep him cool. It worked great and cost very little. Any cloth hat or cap would work. Of course it will get drippy as it melts but no big deal if you are outside and hot anyway.

I get the ice packs that are made of some chemical that keeps them flexible when frozen. Anything hard pressing on the back of my neck just makes it worse. Also snow or crushed ice in a ziplock bag works well in a pinch.

Thanks for the replies and ideas. I think I'll get a cloth hat and try that.

Today I woke up with a migraine and, being determined not to take any meds today, I have tried cold therapy only. Cold shower on the head for awhile and then frozen wet cloths on my head on and off all day.

It has been surprisingly effective. Much more effective than taking OTCs. In fact, I'm almost pain-free as I write this.

I am now wondering whether this works simply because it numbs the head, or does the cold somehow constrict the blood vessels and reduce the migraine itself? Interesting.

Where is my ice hat? Empty Bandana for Ice

Post  pilot57 Sat Oct 23, 2010 7:00 am

I, too, use ice often, and have found these bandanas to keep my ziplocs (2) filled with ice on my head. They are stretchy and somewhat thin, so I use 2 at a time.

Hope this helps!

PS Sometimes people think I have curlers in my hair....hahahahah...I wish!
