Multiple small strokes Empty Multiple small strokes

Post  gecscooby Mon May 24, 2010 8:18 pm

I went for my followup appointment to my new neurologist today (I just moved from IA to FL). I had an MRI, MRA, carotid doppler, blood tests, etc. I expected him to tell me the same thing as all the other docs in the past have said, it JUST migraines. However, I was told that I have had multiple small strokes. Not something I was expecting. I was expecting to be told my cholesterol was high and my BP was too high, but nothing else.

So, he added some new meds (all of which I have taken before): verapamil, lisinopril, crestor, aspirin, vitmin b-12 and folic acid. I have to check my BP twice a day, keep track of my migraines again, change my diet, and exercise more.

I do not want to have a big stroke. That really scares me.

Scary stuff. Take care of yourself and it's always better to know than to not know.

Wow - I feel for you. At least you know and are now being proactive to prevent any more.

Was this your first MRI? If not, how come no one noticed them before?

I've brought this up several times on the forum that migraines are dangerous and can cause strokes.
Unless you have a whopper there is no way to know you have had one for sure without an MRI. Many people have gone about with undiagnosed strokes. This is very dangerous because there are measures you can take to avoid additional ones. If you have any stroke like symptoms, don't pass it off as a migraine and don't let your doctor pass it off as a migraine!!

Tell them that you would like to have a blood draw to check your ANCA levels. This can be a symptom of vasculitis which is am auto immune disease.

Also ask them to do an angiogram. My daughter's test results came up with this Dx and I have been reading up a lot on it. It is rare. That's what this forum is all about, right?!
