The "normal" migraine triggers....
Cheese, Chocolate, Red wine etc.?

I cant say I have every noticed anything, but I cant find any dietary link.

It goes with the description they give us in the media as I mentioned in a previous post.
Just curious how much validity there is in this in reality.

I can't say I'm triggered by anything. My diet doesn't influence severity (frequency - get them to stop and then I'll know). I know that when I had them (it was about 8 years or so ago) that stress was my trigger then. Even before mine went to the current state, they were cyclic. So I'm thinking no to triggers in general...it would be lovely if there was just something I could avoid however. Smile

I am told by a dr that all of these sensitivities are usually due to a sluggish pancreas.
She said if we can get that working better (it is part of the digestive, and ladies.....endocrine system).
I dont say she's right, but I am trying because I have IBS and FMS as well.

here's my conclusion, after 41 years of trying to figure out the WHYS of my head pain. wine and cheese, yes, problematic. that's because they are both made with fermentation processes. my body can't stand anything fermented except pure, unadulterated yogurt, and daisy brand (no chemicals) sour cream.

chocolate isn't made by fermenting it, as far as i know. it's the CHEMICALS in it which are bothersome, particularly the soy lecithin. this is an MSG-like ingredient. i've found two or three U.S. brands of dark choc, w/o soy. anything soy is also a trigger, because these ingredients often behave like MSG.

i bring my own food to gatherings/parties. how fun is that?? but if it keeps me out of bed and functioning, i can do anything.....dianne

I just started a thread sort of on the same subject. I can eat/drink all of those things and some times I get a migraine and some times I don't. I think I am just going to get them when I am going to get them reagardless of anything I eat or do. So, I choose to just do what I want. My lifestyle/diet is pretty much a healthy one. I don't abuse anything. Sure wish something was causing them that I had control over. How simple would that be.

I avoid alcohol, any processed foods with nitrates or nitrites in them, all most all processed foods as they contain MSG.

I can eat dark chocolate with no problems. Cheap milk chocolate with lots of additives is not good.

Chocolate can trigger a migraine within minutes, but as it doesn't always happen, I assume it's when other triggers are present but I don't know what they are Shocked frustrating.

The only other 'food' which I think affects them is sugar. One month I didn't have any sugar at all for a couple of weeks before the hormonal migraine and it was heaps better. Mind you that was when I was only having the mega ones once a month, not several times a week. So . . . . as I'm feeling in a black hole with the head at the moment, I've given up cakes, biscuits, etc for Lent. I'm not examining ingredients in everything as I know there's hidden sugar everywhere but I want to see if limiting the sugar may help. That's if I can keep it up - my willpower is usually non-existent Embarassed

of the "normal" food triggers, only aspartame and citrus cause M's for me. Aspartame is the worst. ANY amount will put me flat on my back. Citrus is ok in small amounts on rare occasions. I can't eat an orange every day though or I'm in serious pain.

I don't find I'm triggered by any of the "normals" but I know some ppl who are. One woman who can't eat cheese, everytime she eats it, migraine 100% guaranteed. (It only ever happens by accident now!)

Oh actually, red dye does it for me, and I think that's pretty common.

My triggers vary. If only I could suss them out, life would be so much easier scratch

I have an extra migraine today...really pissed me off..
I ate chocolate yesterday....only 3 squares.
But now I am wondering if it can effect me when I am already in migraine phase...

I love desert wine.

There is a particular one I buy that is just heavenly.

As long as I keep it to one glass, I can have one a couple of times per month.

The only other food I know bothers me is deli meats.

One time we went to a Christmas party where they had deli meats to make sandwiches with.

About an hour after eating a sandwich, I was on the way to the Er.

MSG, darker chocolate, and certain alcoholic beverages are bad for me. Aspartame is no problem as is cheese.

Soy bothers me too, but I wasn't aware that it often has ingredients that behave like MSG. I thought it might help because of it's other health benefits, but I end up with an escalated migraine each time I've tried. Thanks for enlightening me, Dianne.

Otherwise, chocolate and alcohol are triggers for me.

I tried it for menopause stuff. I can see now, thanks to this info why I felt I got worse....
