anybody have this symptom? Empty anybody have this symptom?

Post  Jewishmother Sat Jan 23, 2010 8:56 pm

I think I may have asked this before but just in case someone can relate I am asking again. I recognize that symptoms change over time but one particular symptom appeared last year and is now daily.........I get very cold and confused and have this very intense lightheaded feeling which overpowers my brain and I can't stay awake/alert/conscious and I slowly fade out for about an hour or so.........it is not sleeping.......such an odd feeling........I try to stay alert but it just overwhelms me and I can't stay awake/conscious. I have had all the tests and they have ruled out everything so my current diagnosis is basilar migraine or complex migraine. Anyone else have this symptom? It would certainly make me feel less crazy if someone else felt this way too!

I used to get that way after an aura from age 12-18. After that the pattern or experience changed.

Howdy

Yes, when an episode is approaching my body cools down a few degrees. I can tell a difference in my feet and legs. I then often get confused, cannot think straight, have no idea where I am ... though I still recognize most people. I act drunk and confused and light headed. I do not go unconscious but I have no trouble falling to sleep. It IS a very strange and difficult to describe feeling ... getting lost a straight road in your hometown, getting worried because I do not know who is driving the other cars, not able to walk by myself to the bedroom, forgetting how to get into a car or how to turn around and sit on the sofa ... I get confused and cannot figure out the simplest task. BTW, I am NOT driving when this occurs ... someone else is helping me out and driving. But you are not alone. These episodes are a disabling pain in one's life ... but no the end of the world. Frankly I and my friends take these episodes in stride now.

anybody have this symptom? Empty cold and confused sounds familiar.

Post  dizzyflower Sun Jan 24, 2010 7:55 am

Not really feeling as if I am really there is quite familiar as is feeling cold.

I have taken to walking around with a blanket wrapped round me like a big bath towel recently and I still feel cold, so I tried wearing the blanket and using my exercise bicycle (it doesn't have a seat you sit on the sofa so I can't fall off and hurt myself which would be an issue) the last time with a cup of warm tea at my side. I still felt cold and not there, where anyone else would have been boiling.

I am glad you asked this question, I thought it was just me. I get very confused, from not thinking words properly, or saying something to myself and then aswering myself and being surprised and looking round for the other person that said it, to just sitting not doing anything and not noticing the time as if I am switched off. I can also just go to sleep just about anywhere, doing anything.

It is really annoying. Sorry you have to put up with this.

Find the warmest gloves and slippers you can and wear them. I know it doesn't seem like much, but the cold always hits me and since I have been wearing gloves and slippers in the house as soon as I get the chill it helps a lot. You have to put them on as soon as you notice you are getting cold though, otherwise it doesn't help much.

Hope you feel better!

Thanks for the responses..........makes me feel saner to know there are others out there with symptoms like mine. I have had migraines for 30 years now but the fading out is new (primary symptom used to be the lightheadedness and brief syncope)........and every day when it happens I think I can fight it but I always lose. When I feel one coming on now I shut all the lights off, pile on the blankets and lay on the couch..........have a couch at work now too - though working is getting to be next to impossible - trying to take it all in stride..........thanks again for helping keep me sane.

I notice that as my pain escalates, the more cold I get. I wear wool blend socks all the time around the house (even sometimes during the summer when the AC is on), and sometimes with slippers, and three afgans.

The feeling of not being quite there is very common for me. It's like brain function shuts down. Can't think or concentrate and my vision gets blurry.

Usually after I've taken my abortive meds, within a couple of hours, I usually warm up and sometimes then to the other extreme with a hot flash.

I try to drink lots of water; when I'm really cold I notice I'm thirstier. No sure what that has to do with it.
