More Serotonin BS? Empty More Serotonin BS?

Post  02R96 Tue Jan 26, 2010 8:51 pm

I read on an internet forum (so it's got to be true) that the long time use of opiates will cause the body to stop producing Serotonin, thus causing the person to become clinically depressed after stopping the opiate use AND the production of Serotonin never recovers to a normal level again.

Anyone ever hear of this one? Suspect

Thinking about it, I wonder if this occurs only to abusers who take huge amounts to get high, not people who only take prescribed therapeutic amounts.

How do opiates effect your serotonin levels? I never got that impression. I thought only mood enhancing drugs like MDMA, LSD, and anti-depressants ect. effect your serotonin levels.

Opiates go to certain receptors in your brain and I was pretty sure none of it had anything to do with serotonin.

But, but, I read it on the internet...

It's GOT to be true!!!! affraid

Actually that's the first time I ever heard of such a thing so my theory about abusers was just an uneducated guess trying to rationalize what was posted. No MD has never warned me about this, nor have I ever read anything about it affecting Serotonin levels, and I've been taking various forms of hydro for years now to control my pain. So I have to believe it's...

Actually, opiates suppress the central nervous system. Your breathing and heart rate are all affected when you take opiate medication therefore your seretonin levels are affected when taking opiate medications.
