I have always seen MD's for medical care and didn't even know what a DO was until a friend of mine started going to osteopathic medical school to become one. After a long conversation with this friend, that included some venting from me about migraine, he suggested that I see a DO. They focus on a more holistic health approach, and may see things MDs do not.

I found a DO neuro, and will be seeing him in 3 days. Does anyone here use a DO, and have they had better luck with one or the other?

Has anyone seen a DO instead of an MD? Empty DO

About two years ago, I switched from an MD to a DO.  After seeing me for about 15 minutes, he said, a lot of your headache problem is due to the 4-way by pass surgery; your pericardium (sac around heart)  and diaphragm muscle on the left side are tight because of the surgery.  Also the scar on the chest and right leg are causing restrictions in the body's fascia.  He recommended that I see an Osteopath that specializes in neuromuscular-skeletal disorders.  He referred to one outside the HMO (that means I pay).  He also recommended a few supplements.

When the referred DO was no longer practicing in the area, he referred me to a Cranial Sacral Therapist that he was seeing for his problem.

Unfortunately, I left the area and I could not get another DO with the HMO in this area.  However, I am seeing another Cranial Sacral Therapist in this area.

Mind you, he was fresh out of DO medical school.  No other MD had considered muscle problems.

Since then, I've made a lot of progress.  However, I am not a migraineur, since my headache is constant and not episodic.

This is really an interesting idea that I can't believe I had not really considered. About 15 years ago in the town I was living in, I saw a DO for many years that was probably the best Doctor I have ever had. Because they have training in chiropractic and homeopathic as well, they tend to think "outside the box" where an MD might not. I had forgotten that he was the one who pushed me to consult a surgeon for my son when he was 18 months old when all the Peds Docs just wanted to continue him on non-stop antibiotics. After the surgery he made a full recovery. Thanks for posting this.

Here is a list of DOs who specialize in neuromuscular-skeletal imbalances, the referral is on the upper left side:

Thanks for the info Martin, and Cindy I loved your story!

Unfortunately, you were spot on about the DO needing to be right out of med school. I think this fact is probably more important than the DO or MD classification. The guy I saw has been practicing for 20 or 30 years, and I don't know how many headache patients he sees, but by the end he was frustrated with my case. Though I went in asking for a 2nd opinion, I left with him telling me to "pick a neurologist", reluctant to offer much help at all.

Back to my regular neuro I go...
