The dreaded root canal

Eeek!  I have to get a root canal.  Has anyone here had one?  How is that supposed to work with migraine problems?  Do I just have to look forward to a humongous one?

I have never had one but had to have a filling today. To my surprise, I got the nitrous oxide, and all migraine pain was totally gone the whole time. Can you get that? I have avoided the dentist for three years due to migraine triggering, but the gas made it OK.

I think that my root canal was done about 25 years ago, long before I was actually diagnosed with migraines.

I got it done today.  I opted for the anesthesia. That was a really great suggestion!  Thanks migraingmoma!

I'm actually doing ok.  No major migraine.  I recommend it if any of you have to get one.

I'm freaking out about getting an aura during the procedure. Just a half hour of being done of having teeth filled I got a heavy duty aura. I may just opt to having the tooth pulled.

I was seriously worried also.  Ask if you can get at least partially anesthetized.  I was still conscious but out of it.   It really helped with keeping me relaxed.  And no migraine developed.  I had only very mild soreness (a 1 or 2 out if 10) afterwards.  A simple Advil type solution.  I can't tell you how relieved I am that it was no where near as bad as I've heard.

( and I too have gotten a migraine from dental procedures and cleanings in the past due to the need to have my mouth open and head turned that long.).

I also have experienced that using nitrous oxide for dental work relieves migraine pain, or I should say did not exzaborate. Versus with only local I have been surprised by intense referred tooth, jaw and migraine pain.

please, oh please don't get your tooth pulled.  you might avoid a migraine, but having no tooth is forever........with my horrid dental history of having 35 teeth pulled in my life i know how important it is to keep your own teeth.  now that i'm 74 they are gradually disintegrating, but i'm determined to spend what it takes to keep what's left.  

(yes, that's more than normal people ever have in their mouth.  i had a bunch of extras, plus have now lost 2 to abscesses and almost lost another one recently.  it was saved by a 12-hour root canal.)  

i've had several root canals and they really aren't bad anymore, if you get a great dentist with an understanding of all that goes into the migraineur's sensitivities.  sure, i had head pain afterward, but not the killer type.  i think a lot of it has to do with the position in the dental chair.  i bring my own pillow for my touchy neck, but still, it's too long in one position.  dianne
