Anyone with a TMS machine treatemnt experience?

Post  Mini on Sat Jan 25, 2014 9:45 am

A friend send me an article which appeared on the first page of a popular daily paper here under the title: New way to beat the agony of migraine.
Apparently the TSM device has been approved for use by the NHS here in UK  because after extensive trials there was a very high success rate of stopping, or considerably reducing patient's long lasting migraines.

According to Prof Goadsby a single pulse magnetic cranial stimulation with TSM device is delivering a real improvement in migraine treatment andt is both effective, and extremely well tolerated.

Other M specialist said that this is a new era in M treatment, but they add that the treatment should only be done by an experienced neurologist.

The article added that in UK alone there is about 10 million M sufferers.

But since the device was developed by a Californian based company, I was wondering if anyone here had any experience of this treatment.

Sorry for the delay in response due to  the time difference, Seaine.

TSM (transcranial magnetic stimulation), is a handheld box which sends magnetic impulses through the brain.
It is cheap and easy to use.

BTW I really don't know how much of this will be helpful to you, but I will try to pass on what I have read in this article, and I cannot personally vouch for all the above information, beyond what I have read, so with this in mind I will try to give you as much information, as I have myself.

The article further mentions that the doctors describe M as an "electric storm", during which the brain is hyperexcitable (I thought this is quite a good description) and the extensive research appears to show that the brief pulse of energy like magnetic stimulation can apparently "short-circuit" the development of M, destroying the neurons in the brain.

I also want to add that for any medication, or devices to be approved here in UK by NICE (which is a similar kind of organisation as FDA in USA) they will be only approved after quite  an extensive clinical tests. It is far from easy to get such approval, so this makes me feel that this news is quite significant.

The rest we need to watch and follow on internet, but it would be very useful to find out about any personal experiences of the device itself.

I will be getting in touch with my neurologist who is in the top London M clinic to find out what he thinks about it, but at the moment I am recovering from and op at home, and do not feel very energetic.
