Acute Confusional Migraine Empty Acute Confusional Migraine

My teenage daughter (15) has been diagnosed with Acute Confusional Migraines. Her symptoms are nausea/vomiting, confusion, disorientation, blurred vision, visual hallucinations (actually seeing people, things that aren't really there), difficulty walking, doesn't recognise people (even me), losing conciousness for short periods ..... along with the migraine. She gets migraines several times per week, they don't usually progress to this state. The severe episodes described above have occurred approx 3 times/ year over the past several years. Very scary, as we never know which migraine will develop into this. She has had an MRI that was fine. Her doctors say there is nothing more they can do. Is there anyone else out there who has experienced something like this?

I am sorry that your daughter is struggling with migraines. My auras include confusion, numbness, disorientation, inability to think and unconsciousness - it is kind of like my brain stops being able to filter stimuli and it goes into overdrive and then I slowly fade out. I think it just needs to reboot. I am "out" anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. Does your daughter know what her triggers are? It is important for your daughter to get a complete neuro work-up to rule out anything else. Migraine is usually a rule-out diagnosis.

It is important for your daughter to also start a migraine diary - keep track of her diet, activity, hormone cycles etc...and see if there is any common denominator. Please keep us posted.
