Anyone use amitiza?
The constipation from taking daily narcotics has gotten TERRIBLE. Even taking Sennekot S. I was doubled over this morning and up all night.
The neuo has given me a prescription for amitiza. Anyone have experience with this?

Yes, I did for about a week. My doctor gave me some samples. I remember it being effective after about 3 or 4 days, but I didn't want another medication.
Now I consume about 10-15 prunes a day, and it does the trick.

My husband eats prunes. They work, but we all get to share in the "side effects"

Pen, your message gave me the giggles. I know where you are coming from. Men tend to be less inhibited when it comes to their digestive troubles. Sorry guys!

My daughters used to give me a hard time about that, especially when their friends came over.

Well, silly me. It wasn't constipation. I was driving the three hours home from my Drs appt and had to stop at the ER sixty miles from home.
I'm not constipated at all ( at least in didn't show up in abdominal and digital exam). It appears I may have diverticulitis. Waiting for the ct scan and blood work.
They just gave me some fentanyl. When I pulled I couldn't even talk it hurt so bad.
So..when it rains.....

I used it for a couple years because of all the small bowel obstructions I was having. It did nothing and since they pulled the other drug I decided it was possibly risky as well.
I use Miralax 2x day. I have for a year. The GI doc says it is safe and to not use the stool softeners with laxative. My large intestine was black from the dye. That will clear up.

Try eating an orange in the morning before eating anything else. I have the opposite effect - no problem whatsoever in going and going and going. Orange is the most effective thing I've tried. Doesn't have the side effects as noted with the prunes. Maybe it might work in getting it happening too not just slowing it down.

I love oranges but they are on the list as a migraine trigger. I was told, and have read that 1/2 an orange a day is the max.
Try it but remember to watch for it to be a trigger.

I dont seem to have any triggers, but can confirm that citrus fruit is not a trigger for the people I know with migraine.
Mind you if you know its a trigger for you, I guess you can live without oranges.

You can no longer say that. LOL Citrus is a trigger for me. I can eat an occasional orange without an issue, but if I eat one every day or more, they do trigger my migraines. Of course, sometimes I think it would be easier to list what doesn't cause them for me. lol

Re: Anyone use amitiza?
I've been taking this Amitiza 24mg for about 6 months, and it has made a world of a difference. I've had constipation for over 8 years, I'm in my late 20s, healthy, female, & moderately active. Things that normally would give others runny diarrhea, like prune juice, I would barely see any effect. My doctor put me on this twice a day, & it works great. I had few side effects, and only for about a week. For more details visit

Re: Anyone use amitiza?
Any update on the potential diverticulitis?
I was put on Amitiza about a month ago, also due to opiate constipation. However, I also have SIBO (bacterial overgrowth, causes gas/bloating/opposite of constipation). So, my main issue is that my system moves very slowly (Sitz marker test was over a week, when it should be 2-3 days), and none of the laxatives help that (they just turn everything to liquid).
I've stayed on some Miralax. At first it seemed to help some of my symptoms like the gas & bloating, but it doesn't seem to speed anything up. Looks like there isn't much of anything n the market for that. At least I don't seem to get any side effects, and its been on the market for more than a few years, so it doesn't scare me too much. I'll probably re-group with my gastro soon. Best wishes.
