I was informed wednesday when I had to go in for "the shots" because my M had gotten out of control, that most of the meds we are given in this situation are in short supply. (At least here in the USA.)

They are: Compazine, Phenergan, and Toradol. I had known about the compazine, as I had been informed of that shortage in December, but the others were news to me. Just thought I'd share the knowledge. Not sure what the docs will come up with to replace them.

Good Luck everyone!!

Thanks for sharing the medication informaion. The docs will not give me those meds because of PTSD issues from the orginal injuries that cause the migraines to get so bad with me. However, I do know of another shortage in Opana Immediate release as well. The pharmacies here in Florida could not even get it for almost 3 months due to some kind of manufacturing issue.

Thanks for the info.

I know neither my Doctor's office or ER here could get Vistaril for like the last 3 years.

They just recently were able to start getting it again.

That was bad news for me because I cannot take any other anti nauseant med. (Reglan, Compazine, Phenergan, etc.)

They all give me this terrible panic attack type reaction.

Does anyone know why they keep having shortages on meds?

Wouldn't be surprised if due to the economy some companies have gone out of business or have had to cut back on production. That, and demand for all meds has only been increasing with baby boomers, population expansion, and increased prescribing in general.

Cindy-What about Zofran? I got a bad reaction to Reglan and haven't wanted to try similar ones like Compazine, but thankfully Phenergen and Zofran are fine.

tortoisegirl: I do use Zofran and it works pretty good for nausea.

But when I get a shot, I don't just need the anti nauseant but the sedation that the Vistaril gives.

Thank goodness they have vistaril back in stock.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

There are several reasons for the shortages of all kinds of Rx meds in hospitals and pharmacies. One is the low margins for researching, testing and making these types of meds so that pharmacutical companies are not making as much of them. Another is that once a drug becomes out of patent, the margins are a lot lower for making generics. Another reason is that hospitals and pharmacies are cutting costs by not keeping them in inventory. Also lately there have been runs on Rx meds that are in short supply, and some pharmacies and hospitals are hording Rx meds so that their customers are guranteed a supply. This is a known problem for all types of drugs, not just migraine meds. And yes, this seems to be more af an issue in the US. I can fill my Zomig Rx overseas any time I want, and for half the price as in the US. I have found over the past 5 years or so that many pharmacies and hospitals run out of Zomig or they do not stock it. I was in the hospital a year ago and had a migraine. I asked for a Zomig and was given a generic Imitrex (Sumatriptan). They said that they do not stock Zomig in their pharmacy. They wanted to charge me $25 for that one pill, but my insurance forced them to cut it to $5. Generic Sumatriptan can be gotten online for about $2.50 per 100mg pill.
