infant colic
yesterday we reported of a link between mothers who suffer with migraine and infant colic. it seems to be babies that are breast fed who are affected.
mine was bottle fed and was very poorly with colic. anyone else here been affected by colic in their little ones??

infant colic
My daughter was bottle fed and had terrible colic.
This was 26 years ago and I remember a doctor telling me that colic didn't exist.
They didn't have any kind of medicine for it back then either.
There were nights she would cry non stop and I would be about to rip my hair out.
Very interesting subject.

Re: infant colic
My son is just shy of 11 months old now. I breastfed him (though not as long as I would have liked he is on formula now). He didn't have colic, and is the happiest guy ever. Even start sleeping through at 3 weeks!
So I am not sure which to categorize him in since he was combi- fed. He has never been colicky.

colic
it does seem wierd this report as it claims its the breast fed babis that get colic which suggests the migraines in the mother pass on the colic in her milk!!
we were always taught it is hardly ever the breast fed babies that get colic.
all i know is that nursing a baby with a colic will SURELY GIVE you a migraine!!!

Re: infant colic
I recently read an article that saw a correlation between infant colic and development of migraines. They actually believe colic could be the first presentation of migraine. I did breast feed my daughter and I do have migraines. However, I breast fed my son and he does not have migraines (knock on wood). My daughter had terrible colic until age 6 months. She developed episodic migraines that have transformed into CDH at the age of nearly 13. She seems to support the articles theory.

Re: infant colic
GREAT! My son was breast fed and when I stopped the GI issues were horrendus!!! We supplimented him with formula but when it was formula only he would scream. He had reflux, severe even though he never spit up. He had a barium swallow at 6 months. He does have migraines. He is 19 now.
I am sick of the experts with their links to this and that! Years ago they forund a gene making migraine tendency genetic. Did they test for that before saying it's breast feeding? No matter what we do we're wrong. Isn't it exhausting? Are you guys exhausted by it? Can you imagine how many moms won't breast feed now? Breathing is bad for us, eating is bad for us. Everything is bad for us.
I have to believe I did the best possible for him. I don't watch Dr. Oz (ultimate nutrition expert?) very often because it's overwhelming and he's like a humming bird. To get all the suppliments I need, since I can't eat normally, I have to take 20 vitamins a day! Thank God I found a vitamin D in drop form. My level is 17 and I needed 100,000mg a week. Sorry I went off on a tangent there.
Does anybody else feel overwhelmed by all the experts? We are labeled bad mommies for not breast feeding and now they say if we do our child will have migraines. Exhausting!!!

Re: infant colic
I have breast fed both of my babies, one had a little colic but only for about first 5 weeks or so, the other one did not.
When I was concerned about colic I was told by the peadiatrician that this is simply that her digestive system is still adjusting (she was born 10 days early). I ahve breast fed her for the further 8 month and she was the easiest and most cheerful baby after those intital few weeks.
Such reports always make me a little suspitious, firts I would like to know who was funding them. It would not be some formula producing company, by any chance in this case?
It is difficult to find out I know, as such things are often hidded under some hidded science research funding, but the doctors involved get extra pay to do them, so it there can be a vested interest to produce reports to please the fund providers. It happens all too often.

Re: infant colic
My daughter was bottle fed. She did have colic every night for about a month (a really looong month) as a baby. She has had on and off problems with headaches and migraines in her teens and twenties. I think for us it's hereditary.
Is there really a link between colic and migraines? Hard to say. There are so many things that are comorbid with migraine, it is entirely possible. It may be a statistical fluke, but there are more likely underlying factors (inflammation, autoimmune issues, pain pathways, etc..)that come into play. And if mom has a migraine, then dealing with a colicky baby is almost impossible. That's what dads are there for.
But I really wouldn't worry that we are making bad choices as parents. We all do the best we can. Colic has been around for a really long time. There is not much we can do about it, besides the usual remedies. So don't beat yourself up. This too shall pass.

Re: infant colic
I was extremely colicky as a baby, and had lots of unexplained tummy aches during childhood. Could they have been abdominal migraines? They were never dxd.
