What do you take?

Post  FireMama on Thu Mar 29, 2012 8:24 am

I have been dealing with a horrible flare-up of my migraines over the last month or so. My doctor now is refusing to refill my Percocet because she thinks I am having rebound headaches. I know for a fact these are not rebound headaches. I know the difference.

So my question is, what do you take at home for the pain? Currently the best thing that only gives me maybe 30% relief is Naproxen. But now since I've been taking it every day for the last four days, I have had diarrhea. If it isn't one thing, its another.

Hi Firemama,

Sorry to hear you're having a horrible time. It must be frustrating not to be able to get the relief you need. I wonder why your doctor thinks it's rebounds? I think doctors often mean well, but they just don't realise that after so long of getting migraines, we are pretty much experts in all things to do with our own heads.

I am very fortunate to get relief from the triptans so for me that's my go to. When they don't work, when it's a bad turn, I'm afraid nothing actually works - well, I have taken Mersyndol night time version which have an antihistamine in them so that I can sort of sleep through the pain. But basically if the triptans don't work I'm in for a few days of migraine. I can get some relief, at least emotionally, from using lavender oil and a cold cloth.

Hope you find a solution soon Sad

Triptans are also my go to drugs for migraine. Unfortunately, the do cause rebound headaches. So, often, I get into a cycle of migraine, then rebound, migraine, then rebound and so on. When they don't work, I end up in the ER getting a cocktail of pain and nausea meds. I haven't found anything thus far that prevents the migraines. I get one every day and just do the best I can. Good luck to you!
