Hi, I have suffered with migraines since being 18 , the type I get are the aura migraines, with a slight headache afterwards , I have changed my diet and it has made me very antisocial, people don't understand that I am careful what I eat , but I have gone migraine free since the 9th March this year until today, I bent down to pick something up and got the aura, I get very panicky and frightened and when the aura is gone all I keep doing is thinking about what caused it, I keep staring at things to see if it is there again, I get very depressed I feel at a loss as my diet is boring and practically tatesless as I dare not try different food , I feel there is nothing to do but live withit and the thought of it makes me unhappy and unable to enjoy life.
I have been going through perimenopause since I was 36 I am now 47 and still not through it yet, I can say though that the migraine auras are not as severe as I have suffered in the past, but still I am in a panic and fearful of them, my life is a constant worry because I feel I am always watching out for the aura in case it comes again.
This is my story .

Hi Happy Feet and welcome to the forum. We are all fellow suffers so lots of empathy to you.
I don't get the auras, just crushing headaches and mental confusion and sound sensitivity. I guess we all live with our own versions of this thing.

Personally I'm hoping for this to be over with menopause. It sounds like its about a 50/50 shot of that working. Since mine started with perimenopause I'm hoping they'll go when it's over. Maybe for you too.

Hi,
Thank you for the welcome, I know what you mean about the perimenopause and a doctor once told me that migraines do go after the menopause and I can actually say hand on heart that they do seem to less severe, its just the fear of them and the fear while having a migraine aura attack , a never ending fear ,but I know deep down i shouldn't fear them its just they come on suddenly and then whatever you are doing you have to stop its really inconvienient lol!

I have been wondering all day what could have caused it to happen as I have a really plain diet and to be honest its boring but I will try anything if it keeps the pesci auaras away, the only thing different this week is that I decided that the superfood brussel sprouts is a must to add to my diet and I ate lots of them lol, I also ate mushrooms last week on sunday and Monday so wonder if this is what caused it , any thoughts on this ?

Welcome to our forum. I am so glad you found us. What you are going through will sound familiar to many of us. We all had to adjust our lives because of migraine. So often we mourn the loss of freedom, and lack of choices that other people take for granted.

The anxiety that you suffer from is also part of the chemical process, that is often associated with migraine, as is depression. It is normal to feel resentful and sad at times when you realise that you are denied the most simple pleasures, becasue otherwise you have to pay dearly for any slip ups.

Like you I am also sensitive to many food (and other) triggers, so I totally understand your difficulties when going out, meeting friends or cooking for others. I use to have such a great social life before that - I also had many more migraines when I ate "everything".
Now I restrict myself to things which I know are "safe" to eat, and friends who understand.
I no longer care if my food is boring, I just try to be more inventive using lots of herbs and gentle flavourings and exclude all processed foods - just being glad that something works for me.

At least now I know that I am more in control of migraine,so I consider myself lucky. I know that many people are in severe pain becasue nothing works for them, or becasue they are unwilling to stick to such severe diet restrictions. It is not easy, I know. But I firmly believe that it is worth it.

So do not worry what other people think, if they do not want to understand why you need to restrict your diet for health reasons, best try to explain clearly why you need to do that, but rest is up to them. Best still, make some new friends. More understanding friends.

Do not give up, things will get better in time.
Good luck and keep posting, letting us know how you get on.
You are not alone.

Thank you mini,
I have got new friends, we joined a new church recently and they are really understanding and we as in me and husband, went to a dinner party Friday and I had to explain about the food and they were really fine with it even asked me what I can and cannot eat , so it was really lovely socialising again.
Thank you I love this forum its really good to know like you say that we are not alone and if we can help each other then that is a bonus, I have been reading some threads on here about others and i feel so sorry them that nothing seems to work, I should feel lucky like you have said that at least I know what causes migraine aura and how to avoid, just trying to find out what caused this one today scratch
Its great to here I feel at home already flower

I am so gald that you already feel at home here. There are many great people and it is good to know that we are not "strange" or "difficult" when we have to do things differently, that many people have been trough this before us, so we can share and exchange our experinces.

I am thrilled that you have alreayd found new friends who are prepared " to listen" and to understand yoru predicament.
Do not worry too much about one off aura.
Sometimes we just don't know and have to accept that we will not know, since it can be combination fo things, but worrying about it too much might lead to stress, and stress is a well known trigger.

Nice to meet you Happy Feet - does it mean that you love dancing?.
Must go, it is getting late here (I am in UK, England)

Everyone's triggers are different. I have not found any food triggers personally. But those things could be a problem for you. The only way to tell, unfortunately is trial and error.

If the anxiety from the auras is what bothers you, have you tried any stress management approaches, bio feedback, or things like that to help handle the attacks when you get them?

I am going to try some stress management because I certainly have had a lot of that this past two years, both parents sick, mum who just got over cancer , dad suspected Parkinson's , and my 25 year old son had a severe elbow fracture which needed surgery with replacement elbow and plate in , he did it while at work so I think this is quite a lot of stress , but it is really strange why the migraine happened now and not during the time of all the stress scratch

It's very strange but a lot of people get migraines after a stressful period. Kind of a let down effect after the adrenaline wears off I think.

I agree with MigraineGirl, the migraine doesn't always hit durign the stress, but after it's over and done. This summer I was fine through four days of running the in-laws all over LA (not my home town or state) for my SIL's wedding. The day after, I had a major episode which took HUGE amounts of my usual meds (about 3 times more than I usually need). I'm planning to have another big migraine the day after I graduate, which I will gladly bear as the price of being done with school and working retail.

Congrats! What degree did she get?

And thank you for the well wishes, but I really won't mind paying the price for graduating as it means that I will be able to find a full time job and be done with the part time retail position I currently have.

I don't mind the evenings and weekends (since I'm going into a hospital position I'll still have them), but I am looking forward to being appreciated and paid a bit more to work nights and weekends. Most of the hospitals here have a shift differential that means that people on the night shift see a bit more money per hour worked.

Happy Feet, yes of course it is obvious, silly me.
Another "migraine moment" (at least this is a real excuse). I make most silly mistakes and errors when I am like this.
I hope your head is better today Happy Feet, and congratulation about yourd d-i-l graduation.
Well done.
