Bachman Migraine Kerfuffle
I'm getting really teed off with pundits claiming republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachman is unqualified to be president because of her severe migraines and that she "pops pills" for them! I think she's unqualified for ideological and intellectual reasons ( sorry to any supporters here) but her migraines are almost a non-issue.
We here all know how disabling migraines can be, but Bachman is obviously high functioning or she wouldn't be able to go campaigning. I'm sure even during a severe migraine attach she or her vice president could handle an emergency.
And I'm guessing the pills she is "popping" are triptans. Hopefully she's not on narcotics, but even if she is, again I point out her high functioning. She might need some help in getting her triptan or NSAID consumption down, but this is not something I think should be discussed by the pundits who know nothing about migraines.
I hate the demonizing of migraines going on here. Besides, we have had presidents crippled by severe post-polio attacks, Addison's, even Altzheimers!

Re: Bachman Migraine Kerfuffle
Honestly, I don't think I could function at the level needed for that position with the migraine problems I have (assuming I was otherwise qualified). The job of President is a 24/7, extremely high pressure job. You have to be able to make very demanding decisions with constant sleep deprivation. For a chronic migrainer that is a recipe for disaster.
I don't know how bad her migraine problem is. If is well controlled with whatever she is taking, then it may not be an issue. I think if she can withstand the schedules and pressures of the campaign trail, then that will be a good indication. But if she ends up incoherent or missing campaign functions due to migraines, that will be fairly telling.
I wouldn't vote for her for a host of other reasons regardless, but even if I agreed with her, it's something I would have to weigh carefully. You don't have to have your legs to be a good President. You do have to have your brain working very well and your judgements be fast and well thought out.

Re: Bachman Migraine Kerfuffle
I saw a clip about it this morning on the Today show and I watched it with great interest. It was the first I had heard about it. I do agree with her political views, but as Migrainegirl pointed out, I can't imagine how she can adequately perform in such a high-pressure job if she has debilitating migraines.
All I know is what was presented on the TV, so who knows how valid it is. It mentioned that she had to be hospitalized and has missed important functions because of her migraines. I know my own job and family life have suffered terribly, and I am considering taking a leave of absence from work because my coworkers are "picking up my slack" too often and it's unfair to them.
I feel sympathy for her, and I wonder how she even had so many kids with chronic migraines. I'm also very curious as to what meds she takes, lol.

I am not really all that up on this topic. I do worry though that if this woman is elected, that might be crap for other migraine sufferers. If she can do the job as president, what are they gonna expect out of me???? UGH LOL!!!
