Why is the wait always so excruciating??? Empty Why is the wait always so excruciating???

Post  Cindy*W Mon Jan 25, 2010 1:42 pm

For the last 3 months I have been slowly weaning down on my meds.

Haven't done a drug holiday for quite sometime so originally that was the doctor's idea.

When I was less than thrilled about it, he decided he would be happy if I could just cut my dosage back a little bit.

I was on MSContin and doing Ok with it, so he changed me to the same dosage of Hydrocodone and I have been slowly cutting back.

It really wasn't too bad. I have had times when the pain got out of control, but a shot fixed that and it really hasn't been too often.

A week ago I was done with the cutting back and he switched me back to the MSContin.

Things have gone downhill very quickly.

I called last Wednesday (two days after starting back on the MSContin) and told the nurse that the pain was getting bad again and I felt pretty sick.

She told me that he thought if we gave it time, it would work itself out.

Well here it is 5 days later and that isn't happening.

I have been gradually getting sicker and sicker.

I have kept almost nothing down including meds for the last 2 days.

Anyway, I called this morning at 8:30 when they opened and I am still waiting for a call back.

It doesn't look good that I will be getting into see him today and Tuesday is his day off.

Don't see how I could wait til Wednesday.

If they don't give me a solution today, i will have to go to the ER tonight and that is not a pleasant thought to say the least.

Does anyone else have this problem? Do call backs for you take all day?

I left another message at 2:00 that I really wanted to SEE the doctor, just in case they didn't understand me.

My esophagus is irritated from throwing up and I sound like I have a cold or something.

Anyway, just venting a bit.

It makes me feel a little better.

Thanks for listening!!

Thanks for the vent Cindy, I feel you!

I just called my neuro and got my nasty-tryingtobeadoctor-receptionist. I said I had no meds, but I took the last of them and they didn't work one bit. I also took what was left of the vicodin my doctor prescribed to me and they also didn't work. I asked if I could get a steriod package to break my migraine.

She hung up on me.

I called back, she hung up on me again. The third time I called she told me all she could do was make an appointment for Wednesday and that I was taking too many medications!!!!!!! WHAT?! They were all prescribed for my migraines so how is that too many? I was following directions, I don't overuse my meds.

Ugh lady, stick to answering phones and making appointments.

I said again. Please ask for a steriod package. She put me on hold for two seconds and said go to the ER. They will give you something in an IV. Call us back if you can't keep your appointment for Friday. CLICK.

I am now in the process of doing stupid things to get pain medication instead of going to the hosptial. I don't have the money, and I don't want to go there to get an IV that will work for 4 hours, not break my migraine and go home in pain and $100 lighter. IF the meds even work.

I called a headache specialist closer to me. I made an appointment for Feb. 11th. Goodbye nasty receptionist, hello new headache specialist who maybe will help me with my problems instead of hanging up on me and refusing to let me speak to a doctor.

I hope you get a call back and get your situation settled out soon. Sorry to hear we're both having a rough day. Wish I had some hyrdocodone to help you...If only it was that simple.

That has to be one of the worse things, waiting for a call from your doctor when you need meds, I have done that so many times.

I hope you can get the meds. you need really quickly Cindy.

Let me get this straight; the RECEPTIONIST is deciding what meds you can have????

Number One, I would report her behavior to the doctor. What if you were having a medical crisis such as an aneurysm or stroke? You can't be the only person he/she has done this to.

Could you have spoken to a nurse? At my PCP's office that's how it's done. The RECEPTIONIST only routes calls, or handles administrative tasks.

Unbelievable!!!!! Good thing you're out of there!

Thanks everyone for responding. It really helps.

The nurse finally did call back at about 3:15 and told me to come get a anti nausea shot.

Doctor thinks maybe that will help me keep the meds down.

I am crossing my fingers that it works because if it doesn't, I will have to go to the ER. Sad

Anyway, I will play the waiting game now.

Thanks everyone.

Its not often I am glad I live in England, after reading this....
Its true we just cant go out and buy more drugs here, but it isnt because of lack of money,
It cant be done without a prescription for most meds.
A prescription cost Abt $12. I get 18 triptans each time for that.
Some docs are more generous than others.
And we are supposed to be seen by a GP at our practice same day we call.
So far this has always worked for me, although I have to see whoever is the duty doctor if my own is fully booked.

What an awful time you guys have been having....

So sorry

Cindy- I'm so sorry your in such rough shape Sad I hope the shot worked and you got some relief! Waiting IS the hardest part... Especially when you're suffering!!

Get Well!!

LG- that receptionist stinks and that practice doesn't deserve your business! I would write a letter and hand deliver it to the doctor ( I'm thinking the office girls might not get it to him if you send it). He should know his receptionists are loosing him business!

Ugghhh! Hope u got ahold of something to ease your head pain and njoy your anniversary!

Thank You J, I took two pills when I got home thinking that would knock it out but it didn't.

Now I will be awake all night in pain, with a sick stomach waiting for my daughter to get off work at 6:30 a.m. so she can take me to the ER.

There goes another $150 down the drain.

Please say a prayer for me that whatever doctor I get, they will be nice to me.

You know how that goes, luck of the draw I guess.

Thank you to everyone for your support.

It makes a huge difference.

I am with pen on this one what an awful time you are havin just to get some meds, we have receptionists like that in the uk, when trying to book a docs app you have to go through to the reception first, and my god dont they act like judge and jury all in one, how dare they assume they know your pain or predicament,

ok rant over, i really hope you get some relief soon x

Well I can now commiserate with you. I just ran out of Norco. I've been fighting a chest cold with some heavy duty coughing that had been rattling my brain. Needless to say, it's been a wonderful migraine trigger, so I used more of my regulated amount than I should have. And Hydro is a great cough suppressant too.

So I'm done until this coming Monday. I went to my doctor today to get something for the chronic cough, but I didn't ask for an early refill; gotta know when and when not to! Five day's early is a "when not to"! <grin>

As generous as she's been, I'm not going to push it. Cool
