My headache specialist vs my neurologist
Ok, so today the headache specialist did my botox injections for the first time. She did them WAAAAAAYYYYYY different then my neuro does them. (Hurt like hell!!!!!!)
So I asked that she indicate in her dictation the locations, as the differed so much from how my neuro does them.
She will no longer be following me as of Feb, so it's back to my neuro for injections.
If this round works well....how will I tell my neuro to do it her way? He gives me many many injections in many sites, she gave me much fewer, with larger amounts of medication. She also did a lot less in my face, which is good cus they make my face a bit paralyzed.
I would be switching my care over to her completely but she is leaving the country and not returning.
My neuro is awesome but I find he has stopped looking for solutions for me as the disease progresses. I'm hoping he can help me when my next major exacerbation starts up. I don't have an appointment with the pain clinic until May.
Is there someone else there getting the botox so we can talk about where your injections are being given?

OMG....My head is KILLING me today! I always get this after the botox, but way worse today.
I want to go home from work but I have three very important sessions and I have an intern today. I can't rebook. UGH

So sorry you are in such pain. I don't have any help for you regarding the botox, but I do empathize with you on the Dr. situation. I think it's a great idea for the h/a specialist to write down the exact locations - then if they help you, you can at least show them to your neuro and hopefully he'll learn from it! I know - easier said than done sometimes. Good luck!

I have no suggestions for you Milo, but I really hope you feel better soon. Maybe the pain
is telling you that this round of botox is going to help you more than the last. I'll be thinking of
you and wishing thats the case!
If it gets really bad mess around with the intern a little lol It might at least help raise
your spirits!

Well see, you are american so I assumed that all "messing around" with interns referred to you late president and his doings lol
I love having students at my practice....so I'm too nice to mess around with them.
I took an abortive last night and woke with a manageable headache this AM.

Re: My headache specialist vs my neurologist
UGH....injections were on Monday and I've had to take gravergol each night since. The good part is that the migraine is responding to the gravergol, so I can sleep and wake without one....but it keeps seeping back in by mid day.
I had another KILLER day at work...thank goodness tomorrow is my Friday!
It's also one month exactly until my beach vacation. Yay.

Re: My headache specialist vs my neurologist
Milo,
That is an ergot right? I've been wanting to try Migranal NS for a little bit but I am a smoker so
that pretty much rules me right out. First off, I'd like to ask anyone who might know why they
react and what is the reaction. I am not willing to find out first hand
I read a drug information page on gravergol and it says that you should avoid smoking for hours
before and after taking it. I can do that if it works. Not a problem because smoking really bothers
my migraines anyways, so I avoid it anyhow. I also read that it has the potential to have some really
insane side effects. Do you experience any of them? If you don't mind sharing, what is your opinion
on this abortive?
My standpoint is I don't want to risk anything if it's going to cause me crazy issues. I've tried
numerous triptans and have had no luck. I had success with frova for a couple of uses on and off
but after a little while it stopped working. My neurologist has no interest in me taking triptans as
I get migraines pretty frequently and he is worried about overuse anyways. I am hopeful that
my brand topamax will dull me to a level that I can actually experiment more with the abortives
and find one that works with me.
Sorry that you are having a rough go at things Milo, and I hope that you get better soon. Maybe
you should call the doc that did those injections and talk it over with her. It seems like you are
going through a whole lot more pain then usual.
There's still that option with screwing around with your intern. After all, its friday...the last day
in the week left

Re: My headache specialist vs my neurologist
Gravergol has been a wonder for me.
I could not take the ergot plain as it would make me vomit, so does the nasal...only worse.
The gravergol still makes me have an upset stomach but that is the only side effect.
I have a supply of cafergot that I keep just in case...because I have always had a very, very hard time getting anyone to order gravergol....no idea why...but no one would order it except my neuro.
Lovegia....consider quitting smoking completely ....really not good for your migraines at all. Much easier said then done...but worth all the hard work in the long run.

Re: My headache specialist vs my neurologist
Yes. I have been learning a lot in the last few weeks and I always knew about the dangers of
smoking, however I am getting aquainted with the knowledge of stroke possibility. After I learned
that migraineurs with aura are 2.27 times more likely to have stroke, I freaked. Then I learned
that migraineurs using birth control are a whooping 8X more at risk! Holy *&^%! I got scared
there and didn't even want to know how much smoking effects those statistics and quit looking.
I know cigarettes are one of the leading causes if not the leading cause.
Right before I got pregnant I was working in a machine shop as a parts inspector. I worked beside
a man I admired and he became a father figure to me. He was sharp as a tack, witty and had a
zest for life I never knew an old man could have. He taught me math like no other person could and
trust me; no other person could. Walking into that job I knew it was going to be difficult, but I really
wanted to learn and grow. I wanted nothing more than be like my father who is not only one of the
best machinists but a great manager, business man, determined, and intellegent.
He got spinal meningitis. It wreaked havok on most of his body, and in a day almost killed him. It
was not looking so good. I was so upset about this. I came to find out he had mini strokes due
to complications of the illness. As soon as he came out of ICU I went to visit him. He was a different
man. He could no longer put a sentence together. He didn't move so well at all. His mind was gone,
he couldn't even figure me out. This was attributed to the mini strokes he had.
He went to rehabilitation and his results were fantastic. He gained a lot of mental strength back but
even though he denied it, he wasn't doing well up there. He lost a lot of what he had and his zest
was faded. I do not want to be that. I will give up cigarettes whatever I have to do to avoid it.
I am going to see someone about getting a prescription for chantix. It shouldn't be that difficult.
It seems to have a high success rate and I knew a few people with personal experiences. I will
start there. If anyone has any advice I will be more than happy to accept it. I'm going to need
some support as I started smoking at 13, became addicted at 15 and have been at it since then.
Bad. I know.
Thank you for the information on ergots

Re: My headache specialist vs my neurologist
It will be worth all the hard work! AND you will greatly reduce your daughter's chance of smoking if you quit!!!!
I'm sorry about watching your freind go through that.
Champix does have some great figures for success. It affects your ability to "enjoy" smoking. It's expensive here, so most of my patients can't take it. I know plenty of hospital staff who quit smoking using it though.
My patients find the inhalers are the most helpful. These little inhalers seem to really, really help. I only wish they were around when I quit smoking!

Thanks, and it may cut it down but my husband still smokes heavily. We do not smoke in the house
or car, or anywhere she will be for that matter but I still think even if one parent smokes it still
increases the risk of her doing it as well. He won't quit. It will make it so much more difficult for me
but I know I can do it, especially with the help of...anything, really.
I will have to check if my insurance covers the chantix (I believe that is what it is called in US) but
I thought it would be a givin. They don't want you to smoke, it increases your chances for all other
illnesses and in respect makes them spend a whole lot more on various things like extra sick doctors
appts and serious diseases. Even if it is a $70 copay, it would only be for a short time and that is
10 packs of cigarettes at regular price (10 days, 5 with my husband and I)!!! I go to the indian
reservation and get them for $45 because they legally don't charge tax.
If they don't I'll check out the inhalers. We'll see and if worse case, cold turkey, gum and patches
don't seem too bad. I want to give myself the best chances though.

Inhalers are over the counter here and cost about the same as the patches and gum. You can use all three at the same time if you really want to!
