"Cavernous Angiomas" Empty "Cavernous Angiomas"

I just got some very bad news. My grandma had a stroke and an MRI revealed a genetic condition called "Familial Multiple Cavernous Angiomas" or "Arteriovenous Malformations." My mom has already made an appointment to get an MRI to see if she has it. If she does, me and my sisters will of course need to get MRIs as well.

It's a condition you have since birth and is inherited autosomal dominantly, meaning you only need one bad allele and you have the condition. My mother has one uncle and three cousins who are known to have this condition, and one of them had a stroke at the age of 30. The only treatment is brain surgery to permanently remove the lesions.

Most people who have this condition have no symptoms, although the risk of stroke is increased. For people who do have symptoms, they can vary widely and include seizures, odd sensations such as paralysis, numbness, or tingling, and headaches which can be similar in severity to migraines.

As nice as it might be to have a doctor go into my brain and fix it, I still think I'd rather that my mother does not have this condition and me and my sisters be safe from it as well.
