Vitamin D supplements causing migraine

Post  adventuregirl on Thu Dec 23, 2010 3:49 am

Hey Everyone,

So I joined this about a month ago when I was in the middle of weeks straight of migraine...I stopped taking my vitamins and supplements (along with the propranolol I was on) towards the end of November...and viola! Started feeling better in a few days.

Last Friday, I started taking Vitamin D again (nothing else...just that) because I read that everyone should take that and a few other supplements. I thought I'd start slow. I was taking it in the morning.

By Monday around 9 in the morning, I had an awful migraine...and I hadn't had a bad one in weeks. It went away right before bed...I woke up feeling fine. Took a Vitamin D pill and a migraine hit around 9 again.....I didn't take one today and felt completely fine.

It's only 1000IU of vitamin d...any ideas or experiences with this? In the archives, I read that Vitamin D is supposed to HELP us...but it seems to be making me worse

I kind of doubt the Vit. D. (depending on chem. derivative) caused a migraine, but who knows.

Each person is different. We have no way of telling what causes a trigger unless you try a period of time, at least 32 exact replications to get some statistical data.

I take 50,000IU, Ergocalcifen Vit.D. once a week for a documented deficiency. I do not note an increase due to taking the medication.

As I've said, who knows--what may trigger in one, may not in another.

I wish you good luck!

I take 5000 mg of vitamin D per day as part of supplements that are helping my migraines. But if it is having the opposite effect for you I would certainly stop taking them. No idea why that would be though.

Vit d or supplement causing M ?

Post  rileyoday on Thu Dec 23, 2010 7:37 am

Over the years of trying to help myself I have tried Vitamins. I am certain I feel better without. But that is more proof we are all different and you have to keep trying things to help yourself. Even a simple multi Vitamin was too much for moi. { me }

Vit D

Do a search on Vitamin D, we had this discussion before. Mule Kick and I were the only ones who thought Vit D was a problem. I didn't take it 32 times, more like 6, before I gave up. I might give it a go now and see if anything's changed.

I did look through the older posts...and didn't see that people did have a problem with it. I am glad to know that I am not the only one...

cholecalciferol

Post  dcook60 on Thu Dec 23, 2010 5:34 pm

in case anyone above didn't address the excipient ingredients in vitamin D (or any other supplement) i believe these extraneous things are what may make us worse.

years ago, i took truckloads of every vitamin, mineral, etc. which was touted to cure every human ailment. wow, why did i get worse, then?

now i know it's because my body doesn't like processed anything, especially things not occurring in nature. it took many years of suffering and wondering, to finally figure it out.

always, i have to try multiple brands to find one i'm able to take, and for a couple of years now have taken THOMPSON 1000 IU of cholecalciferol w/o problems.

my D level has been measured and it's within normal range. (but nobody really knows what normal is, do they?) since i live in a northern climate, i think it's prudent to take some, since i use very little milk or fortified food.

maybe this will help someone. i shop for such items at "super supplements" and a local health-food supermarket which WILL take things back and issue refunds, if i find i can't take them. dianne

I have asked this before, because I get migraine with every form of Vit. D out there. My Dr, is frantic for me to use it since I tested at 11 for it! She thinks it is because I dont detox well and it is causing some kind of flush of toxins (from Lyme disease). I am thinking of buying a sunlamp that is supposed to give the proper light to make Vit. D in the body.
Hugs,
Cindy
