Anybody have anything like ths?

My son Paul has been having a terrible time again lately (most of you know is long history of migraines and not finding anything to help, etc.). He gets them almost every day, but these have been different lately.

His migraines have been different in that they are flaring up to high pain, then going down, then flaring back up, which usually they don't do like that. And at the same time, he is having a very achey/tired feeling neck on one side - like a tired muscle that really hurts. He has done NOTHING to pull his neck - it just started out of the blue. He is able to touch his chin to his chest, believe me, I checked that thinking of meningitis, etc. (I lay awake at night thinking of all these horrible things.)

It's almost like he has a virus that has settled in his neck because my husband and I both had an achy neck during the last few weeks - strange. But I'm thinking this could be it for Paul and it is making his headaches strange(r)??

Then I think, if it is a virus, and it affects his migraines like this, does that say something about why he gets migraines. I sure wish we could figure out why this happens - I am so exhausted from trying to figure it out. It's like a horrible puzzle that can't be solved and it is taking its toll on the entire family. Yuck.

Anybody else have something like this ever happen?

I go through periods where my neck, shoulders and upper back flare up. I haven't been able to determine if it precedes an escalated migraine period or is as a result of it.

I've been going to physical therapy for 8 months in an attempt to get the muscles and nerves to calm down.

I'm glad you checked the chin to chest thing, because that always worries me in a young person.

Do you notice that he tenses up when he is migraining? I think that is partially to blame for my neck problems. I tense up in an effort to cause as little movement to my throbbing head as possible.

Icy Hot ointment helps me. I'm able to use moist heat on my upper back and shoulders but only ice packs on my neck and/or head. Heat on my neck and/or head escalates the pain.

Hope you can find something to help him. I understand how scary it can be.

Thanks, Becky. For him, heat on his neck his the only thing he thinks may be helping, but it's obviously not taking it away since this is the third day of it.

And don't you hate it when you call your GP to see one of them, and they are all booked up for the next week - that's nuts! I don't want to see someone who doesn't know anything about Paul because then it just requires a ton of explanation and quite frankly I'm so tired of explaining things. I'm sure everyone on here feels the same way.

I sure do. Even if it's someone else in the same clinic, they don't seem able to look at the existing medical records but instead choose to question everything as if you're there just to get a drug fix.
