wasabi and migraines don't mix
Today I woke up with a low level migraine, took some indomethacin and went to work. I was already having a hard time being there, but not exceptionally hard and could have made it til 4 or 5. Then my coworker brought in homemade sushi rolls. I decided to treat myself to just one, and globbed on the wasabi (as sushi is really just a delivery vehicle for wasabi, much like cupcakes are for frosting).
As soon as the kick from the wasabi dissipated I could barely stand up straight. I had to go sit on the floor in the bathroom. I started crying and crying knowing I would have to take the bus to get home. I turned totally pale and clammy - the pain was very intense and overwhelming. Somehow I got myself home and took more indomethacin in combination with midrin. Now I have a pretty bad headache, but after I take enough midrin I'll pass out and it will go away.
Anyway, today was a very bad experience. I usually don't break down in front of my coworkers, but I couldn't stop crying from the pain and almost everyone I work with saw me. Ah well...

SO sorry to hear about your episode! What a tough break. I'm a wasabi/sushi frequent flyer and I never linked wasabi with migraine trigger, but I always figured that if I was on the edge, anything drastic could throw me over. I sometimes wonder if the mercury or other chemicals that fish absorb could be a migraine trigger.
Some Wasabi has msg, some doesn't or is imitation wasabi. Seaweed has a lot of iodine and that can be a thyroid rush. And, of course, soysauce is practically all msg.
Whatever it was, you didn't deserve that. So sorry.

I'm sorry, Jayme. What an awful ordeal.
I've never had sushi or wasabi, so I can't really relate, but I don't think I'll ever try them either.
Hope you're sleeping by now and wake up feeling better. Take care.

I don't think the wasabi was a trigger per se, as I already had a headache. I really don't get what happened today. I guess my nervous system was already freaking out and it was just too much to bear. I assumed it would be safe, because the intensity of wasabi is usually gone completely in less than a minute - that's why I like it! Oh well, live and learn.

Ahhh, Jaymie, I'm sorry. I love sushi but can't do wasabi (taco bell mild is too spicy for me...). I just like a nice safe California roll.
I hate when my staff see me weak like that. Yet, on the other hand, it makes them very understanding and compassionate.
It almost seems like as we go along in our journey we become more and more sensitized and the nerve endings more jittery...
