zanaflex experts?? Keppra?.... Empty zanaflex experts?? Keppra?....

Hallo my friends!

Sorry I haven't responded for a while. I've been out of commission for 10 days now.
A quick catch-up: I've had a rough summer. Pregnancy then miscarriage, and to top it all off I took a pain med holiday (who are we kidding...it was torment!).
My pain dr of the past 4 years left my hospital, and I was transitioned over to a new Dr there. I had a wonderful relationship with my former doctor. Over the years I've cycled through procedures from radiofrequency to occipital stimulator as well as preventatives and opiates.

I have had no opiates or pain control since May. I finally met him yesterday. I had been using my zanaflex to aid in the migraine pain over the past 4 months or so. This Dr. told me that he didn't want me to have to go on opiates. I was surprised. He works at the pain clinic, has access to my previous dr notes over the past 4 years, and even said that my old dr told him that I am extremely compliant and a trusted patient.

I believe in building trust. I don't necessarily want to go on daily opiates. Yet I did tell him I need something for pain control for when my migraine cycle can't be broken..goes on a few days...
He ended up putting me on Keppra to take at night. Has anyone had experience with this? I read about it online and users weren't too positive.
Instead of giving me a breakthrough med, he told me to take the zanaflex. He said that this was one case in which the generic is VERY different than the brand name, and to stick with the brand name.

From what he said and from what I've read, zanaflex tablets and capsules are to be taken in completely different ways with food.
Tablets should be taken with food.
Capsules get less effective with food.

This is per the pharmacology readings on the zanaflex website to doctors, as well as other sites.
I have capsules.
Now, before I discovered this, at my appt my doctor confidently told me to take the capsules WITH food.

I guess I'll see if my crazy pharmacist can clarify.
I'm disappointed that he thinks that zanaflex should be used as a break-through med, when I've been using it for years to help the lesser migraines and help me relax.

I didn't want to get too confrontational with him as it was my first visit, and I wanted to convey that I have put my trust in him. So I'll try it for a month. Perhaps the next visit in November I can broach the fact that I need something stronger.

Sorry for the long post.
Thanks for reading,

Take care everyone!

Interesting comments on the Zanaflex. I've taken the generic form (Tizanidine) a couple different ways--as an abortive and now as a preventative. Honestly, I don't see any benefits, so I think I'll ask my doctor if they can prescribe Zanaflex by name, and not the generic, to see if it is more effective. I've heard so many good things about it.

Keppra is one I have not tried yet. Sorry.

I know you've had a rough summer. I hope thiings turn around and start looking up soon, and that your doctor can become more aggressive in your treatment.

Please take care. {{{HUGS}}}
