Anyone use Klonopin for sleep?

Post  Paradox on Mon Sep 20, 2010 1:31 pm

Still inns each of the elusive full night sleep. I can get to sleep, no problem. But last night I was up five times. Lunesta has not been successful at keeping me asleep. I had bad side effects with Doxepin and some of the other old school tricyclics.

He's recommending .5 mg of Klonopin. Anyone else tried this?

klonopin has been prescribed for me--i take it for tremor, but it works to make me sleepy. also, my cardiologist likes it since it seems to chill my CNS enough to cut down on the really goofy feeling of skipped beats.

i've been up to 5mg/day. currently at 2mg. i do get brand-name. the generics in benzos aren't as effective as brand in my experience.

for sleep, you need to take it a few hours (3-4) before sleep since it is a long-acting med.

good luck!

I had a lovely 2 1/2 hours of deep sleep. It's 1:15 am and I'm awake. Sigh. Crying or Very sad

I use it for the type of sleep you described......getting to sleep, waking, and not being able to return to sleep. Have taken a stable dose for a couple of years and am very thankful for it.

I have always tried to avoid benzo's. In doing so, I discovered nozinan is very helpful with sleep. The smallest dose of 2.5 -5 mg helps lengthen and strengthen the quality of your sleep.

I tried it, made my head hurt more. But, I have had that same problem with everything I have tried for sleep except my old stand-by Phenergan.

It wasn't a complete bust. I was only up twice. So compared to five times...woo hoo! I'm leery of the benzos though...we'll see. Thanks for the alternative, Milo.

Well Char, you may get scared off of the nozinan if you look it up....but I swear it really helps in tiny doses without any side effects. I mean TINY doses...some people take 100mg....you are aiming for under 5mg. It comes in 5mg and you can cut it in half to try.

Patients tell me that they feel hungover if they take more then 10 mg and that getting up is tough.

My mother takes Neurontin (anti-convulsant) to help her sleep. I took it years ago and along with Ambien, I slept so well.

Yup. 1mg puts me right out. The only problem is I sleep too long and don't want to get up. I use it sparingly...

Please be very cautious with the use of benzo's. Many docs order them without thinking about the addictive qualities.

Make sure you educate yourself well about this class of medications. Smile
